The Charcot Foot Condition - A Little Known Diabetes Complication

by Belver Ladson

Charcot Foot disease is a little known complication that can affect anyone who has diabetes. This condition also occurs in non-diabetic patients too, but diabetics can be more prone to this disease due to a diabetic complication known as neuropathy (nerve damage) Nerve damage can stop someone from feeling pain, so the foot can get injured without the person being aware that something is wrong.

The Charcot Foot condition is a very serious condition. Joints and bones can literally be crushed without being known to the sufferer. Imagine breaking your foot and not knowing that it’s broken due to no pain being felt. As time wears on, those broken bones (and sometimes joints) can suffer irreparable damage, with the person walking on the foot normally instead of the foot being in a cast and trying to heal.

Once this damage happens the foot can become misshapen, become dislocated, warm to the touch, and the arch of the foot can literally collapse. The Charcot condition is often called a “silent” disease since a sufferer might not know there is a problem until massive damage has occurred.

Treatment for this condition, traditionally has been to apply a cast so the fractures and dislocations can heal. The foot would be immobilized for a long period of time (often a year or more). Surgery, although done in some cases is ruled out for many patients due to an increased risk of the foot not healing properly.

Some patients must wear a special brace on their foot/leg in order to be able to walk with the Charcot condition present. It’s extremely important for the foot to stay as stable as possible in order to avoid future additional damage such as ulcers, infection and amputation.

A Charcot Foot (also called a Charcot Fracture) can bring devastating changes to a person’s life. Day-to-day activities can be limited and the person might find themselves immobilized for long periods of time, sometimes having to use a wheelchair to get around. Often people can go back to work after treatment with limitations and/or corrective shoes/braces.

Belver's life goal is to help others see the goodness in life and to let them know that hope is always present. Belver can be reached at http://www.dfandiabetes.com.

Carb Addict - Yes or No?

by J. Brian Keith

Would you like to find out what those-in-the-know have to say about carbohydrates? The information in the article below comes straight from well-informed experts with special knowledge about carbohydrates.

Now that we've covered those aspects of carbohydrates, let's turn to some of the other factors that need to be considered.

It has been estimated that three out of every four overweight people are addicted to carbohydrates. But what does this mean? In essence, it means that you have too much of the hormone insulin in your system. This insulin prompts you to eat often and to consume the wrong types of foods. Some of the tell-tale signs of carbohydrate addiction include fatigue, mood swings, and migraines which can be caused by low blood sugar.

A carb addiction can lead you to consume a whole bag of pretzels at one sitting, or to indulge in half a cake at dinner time. Your body is conditioned to eat as many carbs as possible. Thus, it may seem that at times you’re never really satisfied—no matter how much or how often you eat.

On the official Carb Addicts plan, you eat two meals composed of vegetables and protein; the other meal consists of protein, vegetables that are not filled with starch, and carbohydrates. During this last meal, known as the reward meal, you can even eat dessert. The trick is to skip the carbs for two meals each day.

The authors of the program believe that, if you follow this regimen, you will lose your cravings for carbohydrates in time. If your urge to consume carbs does not disappear by the second week of the program, they recommend checking your diet to see whether you are following the program closely.

With the Carb Addicts plan, like other diet plans, you need to closely monitor your portion sizes. All of your hard work will be in vain if you allow yourself to over indulge in sweets—even if it is for only one meal a day. Also, you need to make sure that the protein you consume is not high in fat. You may want to eat fish, chicken with the skin removed, or lean meats when trying to obtain a protein source.

Another important aspect of the Carb Addicts plan is that you are not permitted artificial sweetener except during your reward meal. This can be quite a challenge, especially if you’re accustomed to sweetened coffee in the morning. However, it can be well worth the deprivation in the long run as you see those pounds melt away.

There is no set time for the reward meal; however the authors of the plan recommend that the meal take place in the evening. This is because it can take 12 to 24 hours for the body to overcome carbohydrate overload. There is also a psychological advantage to having the meal at night. It gives you something to look forward to all day long.

You should begin your reward meal with a salad, such as a Caesar salad or an Oriental salad, then divide the rest of the meal into thirds: One third should consist of low-carb vegetables, one-third protein, and one-third carbs. This formula has proven successful in enabling individuals to achieve long-term weight loss.

As with many other meal plans, the biggest challenge for those who are on the Carb Addicts Diet is the ability to stick with it. Dieting can be hard work, no matter what kind of rewards await an individual at the end of the day. Your commitment will enable you to stay with the program, even when it becomes particularly challenging.

Surf the World Wide Web, and you’ll find a number of testimonials offering glowing reviews of the Carb Addicts Diet. But you should keep in mind that results can differ from individual to individual. While some people might see rapid weight loss with the Carb Addicts plan, others may see only moderate weight loss. The success of the program may depend on your own individual physiology.

Is the Carb Addicts Diet a fad? It all depends on who you talk to. While some people see it as a significant dietary breakthrough, others view it as just a passing fancy. Medical experts disagree as to whether the Carb Addicts Diet represents sound nutrition. In the end, you, in consultation with your personal physician, will have to decide whether the Carb Addicts Diet will work for you.

The day will come when you can use something you read about here to have a beneficial impact. Then you'll be glad you took the time to learn more about carbohydrates.

SOFT DRINKS AND OBESITY

by Dr.Jeffry Weiss

The facts:

• Sodas with added sugars act as a diuretic, flushing water and minerals from the body. These drinks actually make one thirstier.

• Carbonated beverages contain excessive amounts of phosphorous. This interferes with calcium uptake in the body, greatly exacerbating the effects of osteoporosis in middle-aged woman. The same effects are true for men; the only difference being a 10-15 year lag before becoming obvious.

• The amount of caffeine in regular soda is 45 mg. per 12 oz. Children who drink six cans per day are exposed to more caffeine than adults drinking two cups of strong coffee per day, while weighing half as much.

• Soft drinks cause weight gain due to the ‘cephalic phase response’ – a reflex established when the brain reacts to sweet tastes and is tricked into sending false messages to the liver. When sugars (artificial or natural) stimulate the tongue, the brain programs the liver to prepare for the acceptance of new energy. The liver in turn, stops manufacturing glucose from the protein and starch reserves and instead begins to store the metabolic fuels that are circulating in the blood. When the sugar that was promised by the taste buds is nowhere to be found, the brain and liver panic – instructing the person to eat more.

• The carbonation in soft drinks – when ingested in conjunction with food - bloats the system, disrupts the release of stomach acids (interfering with digestion), and halts the absorption of minerals.

• Sodas with added sugar have been implicated in ADD, adult onset diabetes, and a litany of other health problems.

• Caffeine and aspartame (the primary sweetener in the majority of diet soft drinks) are Excitotoxins, chemicals that excite brain cells till they die. They are very similar to MSG in their deleterious effect on the nervous system.

• A new study found that significant correlation between carbonated beverage consumption and esophageal andenocacinoma decades later. In the past 25 years, the number of cases of this cancer has risen by 570% among Caucasian men in the U.S. – the group that consume the most soft drinks.

Healthy Alternatives

Biologically, we drink liquids for two reasons: to flush the system of impurities; to minimize the amount of food we eat. Consider the following to quench your thirst:

Water. The ultimate thirst quencher. However, not all forms are safe. The EPA (environmental protection agency) says our drinking water is safe. They analyze 30 elements in our water to determine purity. Dozens of highly regarded independent scientific studies show that the levels of substances the government says are safe, are not. While testing for thirty elements sounds very impressive, there are over three hundred elements comprising our water. Tap water is not healthy; it is dangerous, filled with heavy metals. Only distilled water goes through the heating and purification needed to insure safety. Artisan spring water, well water, etc., do not go through these steps and are not fit to drink.

Green Tea. Because our diet consisting primarily of processed foods, we do not ingest nearly enough anti-oxidants.

Further, some foods and drinks, because of their make-up, require the body to draw on its stores of anti-oxidants to process them. Soft drinks fall into this category. There is one liquid that will not only satisfy our thirst, but also add to the body’s stores of anti-oxidants: Green Tea. It contains polyphenols (a powerful class of antioxidants). By weight, polyphenols comprise about 30% of the green tea leaf. One recent study compared polyphenols with the standard of antioxidants, vitamin E. The green tea extract was shown to pack 200 times the antioxidant punch of vitamin E. Drink up. But drink the right liquids for all the right reasons.

Tid-Bit: Diet That Can Save Your Vision
Macular degeneration affects up to 25% of people age 75 and older and is the leading cause of blindness in those over age 55. In a recent study including 260 patients over a ten-year period, elderly people who had early signs of macular degeneration risked faster vision loss if their diets were high in specific types of fat, including trans fats in processed baking goods. Diets high in saturated fat from red meat and dairy products also increased risk but not as much. Those whose diets were high in omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish and nuts, had the lowest risk.

by J. Brian Keith

Are you looking for some inside information on ornish diet? Here's an up-to-date report from ornish diet experts who should know.

Hopefully the information presented so far has been applicable. You might also want to consider the following:

In 1993, Dr. Dean Ornish came out with a book entitled Eat More, Weigh Less. The primary focus of the book was to urge people to boost their consumption of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables while decreasing their consumption of fat. Ornish subsequently made headlines by becoming a dietary consultant to McDonald’s, helping the hamburger giant to develop the fruit and walnut salad which now appears on the restaurant’s re-vamped menu.

Ornish’s work began in 1977 when he was studying ways to combat heart attacks. He hypothesized that heart disease could be successfully treated by cutting the fat in a patient’s diet, as well as reducing the amount of unrefined carbohydrates he or she consumes. During his research, he noticed that his patients lost about 25 pounds each and managed to maintain the weight loss for five years.

Ornish offers two different diets, the Reversal Diet and the Prevention Diet. Those who suffer from heart disease and who are trying to decrease their risk of another heart attack would conceivably benefit from the Reversal Diet, while the Prevention Diet is designed for people who have high cholesterol levels, but who have not developed heart disease. Both versions are vegetarian, consisting of 10 percent fat, 20 percent protein, and 70 percent carbohydrates.

If you decide to follow the Ornish diet, you will be eating a great deal of fiber, little fat, and a great deal of vegetables. Under the Ornish program, you can eat as many beans, fruits, grains, and vegetables as you want. However, non-fat dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yogurt should be eaten sparingly. The same holds true for fat-free desserts and yogurt bars.

Still, under the Ornish plan, you will be giving up a great deal. For instance, you will not be permitted to eat meat of any kind, including fish and chicken. You must also pass up oils, avocados, olives, nuts, sugar, and anything that consists of more than two grams of fat for each serving. The diet also forbids the consumption of alcohol. The doctor recommends eating a number of small meals so that you will feel hungry less often. Following this plan, less than ten percent of your calories should come from fat.

Ornish recommends at least 30 minutes of exercise each day, or an hour of exercise three times each week. He also encourages some type of stress management, such as meditation, massage, or yoga. Why? In his book, Ornish writes, “When your soul is fed, you have less need to overeat. When you directly experience the fullness of life, then you have less need to fill the void with food.”

Supporters of the Ornish plan are enthusiastic about its effect on the body. It can successfully combat heart disease, prevent cancer, alleviate the symptoms of diabetes, and help stabilize high blood pressure. In fact, one doctor has said that the Ornish program succeeds because it has a clear scientific basis. Also, the diet is convenient to follow because it does not involve counting calories.

The major disadvantage of the Ornish plan is that it is highly restrictive. This can make it difficult to stay with over the long haul. A number of dieters may be uncomfortable eating food that is so low-fat. The diet also represents a radical change from the typical American meat-and-potatoes fare.
In addition, Ornish fails to recognize that some types of fats are actually good for one’s health. For instance, mono unsaturated and polyunsaturated oils can protect against heart disease. Therefore, Ornish’s prohibitions against fish and nut consumption would seem to be counter-productive.

Is the Ornish diet worth the trouble? If you must not only manage your weight but struggle with heart disease as well, it might be just the diet you need. Also, if you have medical reasons for losing weight, the program is certainly one you should consider. However, if you have difficulty sticking with specific menus—and you love meat—the Ornish diet may be too hard to deal with. When you decide to undertake the Ornish diet, you are making a commitment to vegetarianism. The diet provides you with less protein than the typical diet, which could sap your energy. Thus, a good rule of thumb is to discuss the plan with your family physician to determine if it’s appropriate for your case.

The day will come when you can use something you read about here to have a beneficial impact. Then you'll be glad you took the time to learn more about ornish diet.

THESE THUGS ARE ATTACKING YOU!

by Christine Illich

A free-radical is a molecule or atom that is missing an electron. Free-radicals attack healthy cells within your body trying to steal an electron from them. Free-radicals are nothing more than thugs. All cancer is caused by free-radicals and the damage they do to your DNA. Your DNA holds the blue print for every cell that is created. All cancer is caused by mutated DNA. This is how DNA mutation happens; free-radicals attack your DNA trying to steal an electron, this attack continues and changes the blue print within your DNA, now the cells that are being created by your DNA are mutated with this changed blue print. The cells that are produced are cancer cells and the body no longer recognizes them as you; but they are not cancer yet, one more condition is needed to begin the growth of true cancer and that is inflammation. Inflammation appears when there is an injury to our body; even cell injury. Inflammation is there to help heal but it can not heal a mutation so it feeds the cell and within a few years you have some form of cancer.

We can not avoid free-radicals, they are a part of life; they are found in air and water pollution, the processed foods we eat and are caused by trauma and exercise as well as any medication you may take. Medications have a free-radical nature due to laboratory production and doctors call theses free-radicals and the damage they do; side effects.

The only thing that stops free-radicals is antioxidants; they are molecules that have a spare electron. The only place to find antioxidants is in natural sources. Dietary supplements are needed for optimum health and contain some antioxidants, eating natural foods that are un-processed is very important. Processing foods kills the antioxidants and they will not help you.

Most plants have around 1,000 to 1,500 antioxidants each, which does not seem like a lot compared to the amount of free-radicals you are taking into your body every single day; about a billion.

With the discovery of a fruit from South East Asia called the Mangosteen, scientists have been in a buzz about the amount of antioxidants this fruit contains. The Mangosteen fruit has an amazing 25,000 antioxidants. This fruit has been studied in Universities and by scientists for the last 20 years; they have proved that this fruit has the most powerful and the largest number of antioxidants in nature to date. You can read all the studies by going to (pub med at dot gov) and typing in Mangosteen. The Mangosteen fruit has also been providing thousands of people with pain relief as well as other medicinal benefits, due to super charged antioxidants called Xanthones. Two hundred Xanthones have been identified in nature, 41 are in the Mangosteen fruit alone and you can compare that to the Aloe Vera plant that contains only one Xanthone. One thing about Xanthones you need to know is that they must be consumed in their natural form.

Cancer and other serious illnesses are on the rise in this country. Cancer is a plague; but we have become so accustomed to the word and the disease that we don’t take it as seriously as we should. Cancer destroys not only the body and our cells; it can destroy our families and devastate our financial situation. (pub med at dot gov) is a source that can be used as a guide to help in your recovery; there are links to several informational pages, done by doctors and scientists.

Alternative health care is also on the rise due to medications that cause so many side effects because of their free-radical nature that you can end up in worse health than when you first went into see the doctor. Medications on top of medications will break down your immune system and the free-radicals end up on a rampage through your body, causing mayhem and destruction, and then you need more medication. All medications carry a risk of side effects. Alternatives such as fruits and veggies do not carry these types of risks. You can call toll free 1-888-374-4148 and listen to a message about the amazing power of Xanthones.

Energy, How Does My Body Get It and How Does It Use It?

by Jim O'Neill

Many times people will ask an energetic person they know, where do you get all that energy from?? We just assume they simply have an overactive and limitless supply of energy which we are just not capable of having ourselves. We may ask ourselves, why is it that when I exercise I seem to run out of gas and get tired after thirty minutes but that guy over there seems to be able to keep at it for well over an hour without tiring out? Is he just a more energetic person than me? Why can’t I have that kind of energy when I exercise? What is his secret?

Well, suppose I said, “He has no secret” and “you too can get more energy” and without any magic potion or secret tricks known only to a select few people. Simply having a basic understanding of how your body works and what it needs to make it work at its best will help you to see what may be “the key” to obtaining better energy levels that will have people asking you what your secret is.

In order to build biomolecules and sustain life, your body needs energy. The body gets its energy from the breakdown of nutrients like glucose, amino acids and fatty acids. To construct molecules there must be molecular destruction going on simultaneously to provide the energy required to drive these biochemical reactions. This is an ongoing process that occurs throughout the day.

It must be understood that anabolism (building of tissue) and catabolism (breakdown of tissue) occur simultaneously all the time. However, they differ in magnitude depending on the level of activity or rest and on when the last meal was eaten. When anabolism exceeds catabolism, net growth occurs. When catabolism exceeds anabolism, the body has a net loss of substances and body tissues and may lose weight.

With regard to how your body uses what you give it consider the following.

The fate of an amino acid after it is transported to the liver is highly dependent on the body’s needs for that moment. Some amino acids enter the blood stream, where they join amino acids that have been liberated during the constant breakdown and synthesis of body tissue. Other amino acids are used by the liver to manufacture many of the specialized proteins such as liver enzymes, lipoproteins, and the blood protein (albumin). As these amino acids circulate throughout the body, each cell directed by its own DNA blue print, draws from the common pool of available amino acids to synthesize all the numerous proteins required for its functions.

In order for protein synthesis to occur, an adequate supply of both essential (not produced by your body) and non-essential (produced by your body) amino acids is vital. If one of the essential amino acids is missing then synthesis is halted. These partially assembled proteins are disassembled and the amino acids returned to the blood. Any amino acids that are not used within a short time can not be stored for future use. They are delivered back to the liver and stripped of their nitrogen, then incorporated into urea and excreted by the kidneys. The remaining protein skeleton will be converted to glucose and burned as energy or converted to fat or glycogen for storage.

Although protein synthesis is very important, the body’s number one priority is to obtain sufficient energy to carry on vital functions such as circulation, respiration and digestion. Therefore, in the absence of adequate dietary carbohydrates and fat calories, the body will break down not only dietary protein but protein in the blood, liver, pancreas, muscles, and other tissues in order to maintain vital organs and functions.

With regard to carbohydrates after training consider the following. Our bodies can only absorb monosaccharides (glucose, galactose, or fructose), the single units of sugars and starches. Once absorbed through the small intestines into the portal vein, and then circulated into the bloodstream through the liver as blood glucose, our bodies can put glucose to work in three ways:
1. It can burn the glucose immediately for energy if blood glucose levels are not at a stable level of 20 grams blood borne glucose circulating per hour.

2. If it is not needed for energy immediately, then it is converted into glycogen in the liver or muscles. The liver has the capacity to store 100 grams of glycogen. The muscles have the capacity to store between 250-400 grams of glycogen, depending on muscle mass and physical condition. Liver glycogen supplies energy for the entire body. Muscle glycogen only supplies energy to muscles.

3. If the body has an excess of glucose, and all of the glycogen stores are full, the surplus glucose is converted to fat by the liver and stored as adipose tissue (body fat) around the body. If needed, fatty acids can be burned as fuel (BUT the fat cannot be converted back to glucose).

Now that you have a better idea of what goes on in your body and how your body uses its resources for energy, you may now be able to understand how you can obtain more energy with the simple use of “food” and not some secret magical method.

Just keep in mind that it takes all three macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein and fat) in the proper amounts to keep energy levels at there best. Always be sure to take in some carbohydrates and protein an hour before exercise and some more thirty minutes after, taking in your fats well before and well after exercise.

OBESITY LEADS TO DIABETES

by Dr.Jeffry Weiss

Insulin resistance, or syndrome X as it is now called, is the most under-diagnosed disease in the U.S. today. It is estimated that as much as 25% of the population either has, or has symptoms of diabetes. Six and one-half million Americans are being treated for diabetes. Studies indicate that there are an additional 6.5 million adults with undetected type II diabetes, and another 25 million have impaired glucose tolerance that may lead to full blown diabetes. The primary reason for this is that in 1900 the average person consume 2 pounds of sugar a year. By the years 2000, the amount was 200 pounds per year. Simply, our insulin system is breakingdown faster under an impossible workload.

The difference between Insulin Resistance and Type II Diabetes: Insulin Resistance may occur for many decades before Type II Diabetes is diagnosed. With Insulin Resistance, the pancreas is producing too much insulin. With diabetes, the pancreas can no longer produce insulin. If treated early, Insulin Resistance does not eventually become Diabetes and does not require the daily administration of medication to control the disease.

After eating a high glycemic meal, the pancreas releases insulin to take the excess sugar out of the blood. The problem is that insulin has a greater half-life than glucose. So, even after all the recent sugar is whisked away into the muscles and liver (the body can only store about 300 grams of carbohydrates in the muscles and 60-90 grams in the liver), the insulin is still actively taking even more sugar out of the blood stream until blood sugar level plummet. The brain then signals the body to eat foods that will quickly raise blood sugar levels. This translates to a craving for high glycemic index food
(sugary, products made with processed flour, starches, and some fruits) and the cycle continues.

After years of repeating the process, the pancreas becomes less efficient, or unable, to release enough insulin into the blood stream to take all the excess sugar out of the bloodstream and carry it to the muscle and other cells in the body.
We’ve found the very latest treatments for diabetes – both plant derivatives and pharmacological. Here are just a few of these amazing discoveries. Here is what you should do and shouldn’t do. Here’s what how the body processes sugar, what happens when the process breaks down and what to do to avoid it and what to do if you already have it.

What is Sleep Apnea?

by Scott Fromherz

Are you feeling sleepy all the time? Do you snore? Is your doctor having a difficult time treating your high blood pressure? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you might have Sleep Apnea (also called Obstructive Sleep Apnea or OSA).

Sleep Apnea is a condition involving pauses or decreases in breathing during sleep. It is usually due to airway collapse. This collapse occurs in the nose and/or the throat – anywhere from where air enters the nostrils to the back of the tongue. Imagine a straw collapsing when trying to suck on a thick milkshake. Frequently, this airway collapsibility problem is inherited and starts in childhood. In the daytime, it is not a problem because there is good muscle-tone in the airway and the brain monitors breathing. But at night, the throat muscles become relaxed and the brain is not as attentive to the airway. So on inhalation, the airway walls can either completely collapse or significantly narrow. This is a problem because 1) the body must struggle to breathe and 2) the brain has to “wake up” to reopen the airway.

These frequent awakenings lead to fragmentation of nighttime sleep. You may not remember them because they are so short. In fact, patients with sleep apnea can wake-up more than 30 times an hour and think that they slept uninterrupted through the night. Since sleep must be continuous and consolidated in order to be restorative, a number of cognitive problems can occur with sleep fragmentation: daytime sleepiness, memory problems, concentration difficulties, emotional instability, irritability, slowed reaction time, and most importantly, an increased risk of motor vehicle accidents.

There are also cardiovascular consequences of this constant “struggling to breathe.” This puts a strain on the heart and blood vessels, leading to increased risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.

Finally, there are social implications to Sleep Apnea. The snoring associated with sleep apnea can disrupt the sleep of others. In fact, one study showed that when a person treats his/her sleep apnea, the sleep partner gets the equivalent of one hour more sleep per night.

Sleep apnea is a progressive disease and often gets worse with age. Weight gain, alcohol, and other sedating/relaxing substances exacerbate it.

Who Gets Sleep Apnea?

A common misconception is that only overweight men that snore loudly have sleep apnea, but the facts are:

1) Sleep apnea can occur without snoring
2) Thin people can have sleep apnea
3) Women can have sleep apnea
4) Children can have sleep apnea

In other words, anyone can have it. Even skinny women. Even children.

I Think I Might Have Sleep Apnea, How Do I Find Out If I Have It?

Make an appointment with your primary care physician, or if your insurance allows it, go straight to a sleep specialist. If your physician thinks you might have sleep apnea, then he/she can refer you for a sleep study or comprehensive sleep evaluation.

How Is Sleep Apnea Treated?

There are four main categories of treatment for sleep apnea: Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), Surgery, Oral Appliances, and Behavioral Modification.

The most effective way to treat sleep apnea is with CPAP. CPAP is a mask worn over the nose attached by a hose to an air compressor. The air compressor gently and quietly blows room-air into the nose, which “stents” the airway open, preventing airway collapse. This is the most effective way to treat sleep apnea, and all patients diagnosed with sleep apnea should at least try it before considering other options.

Surgery can be an effective way to treat sleep apnea. A number of different procedures can be performed. These range from nasal septum repair to jaw reconstruction. Talk to your doctor about whether surgery is the right option for you.

An oral appliance is a device made by a dentist or an orthodontist designed to pull your lower jaw forward. By pulling your lower jaw forward, the tongue is pulled away from the back of the throat. If your airway obstruction is occurring behind the tongue, then this can be an effective way to treat your sleep apnea. The treatment of sleep apnea with oral appliance should be a coordinated effort between the sleep physician, the dentist/orthodontist, and the patient.

Behavioral modifications can help in the treatment of sleep apnea, but are usually the least effective. These include such techniques as weight loss, sleeping on your side, and avoiding alcohol before bedtime.

None of these treatment options is ideal, but they all can be useful in treating sleep apnea and resulting in more restful sleep. With risks like heart attack and stroke, you should do everything you can to get your sleep apnea under control. If you think you have sleep apnea, contact your doctor or go to a sleep center. It could be the best decision you ever made.
