Low Cost Ways of Reducing or Preventing Back Pain

by Michael Colucci

The vast majority of people will experience some sort of back pain throughout their lives. When most people think of back pain treatments, they often think of expensive medications and surgical procedures.

However, many would be surprised to learn that low cost methods for treating back pain are available which are quite effective. Several studies have been conducted which show that getting a good amount of cardiovascular exercise on a regular basis is very effective at stopping back pain.

Many of these methods are low cost, such as hiking, swimming, or jogging. Cardiovascular exercises have been shown to be just as effective for treating and preventing back pain as many physical therapies. These activities are fun to do, and will keep both your back and the rest of your body healthy.

Some of you reading this article may be under the impression that this advice is common sense. In reality, many people don't know how to properly exercise their backs, and give up easily when things become tough. Some are already unhealthy and overweight, and have developed bad habits which are difficult to break.

It is important to change your mindset. Instead of looking at cardiovascular exercise as a chore, incorporate it into your everday activities. If you have a job which is close to your home, start riding a bike to work once a week. Start small and work your way up.

Exercise is important for your spine and back. Humans aren't designed to spend hours sitting in front of a computer or in traffic. We are supposed to work out our bodies, and when we don't, problems like chronic back pain develop over time.

When people suffer from back pain, they often stop exercising entirely. They are under the false impression that exercising their backs will put them in even more pain. This is certainly true if they don't exercise properly. The muscles surrounding the spinal column support your body, and need to be strong.

The weaker they are, the more pain you will experience. By exercising, you strengthen these muscles in your back, and they will become strong enough to support your body, relieving you of pain. You don't want to wait until the problem becomes so severe that you need medical treatment.

The costs of healthcare are increasing, and people are finding it hard to afford care. The best type of treatment you can give yourself is prevention by exercising properly and keeping both your back and the rest of your body healthy.

Pain Medicine Online

by Robert Gould

For so many years people who suffer from pain only had 1 choice to obtain pain medication. Fortunately now people have an other alternative in receiving the crucial pain medicine that is necessary for those who live with chronic pain. Chronic pain is defined as pain that is constant. Chronic pain patients now have the choice in getting medications online. So many Americans with medical conditions such as migraine headaches, low back pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis, can now get the relief they need without leaving the comfort of their home.

The old conventional ways of getting medications for your medical conditions required first finding a physician if you don't already have one, which can be pain staking in itself. Then you have to make an appointment once accepted as a new patient which usually takes a month minimum. In the meantime people are suffering in pain. The heartbreak of this scenario is when you do finally get to see a doctor who doesn't know you, after telling them of your medical conditions you leave the appointment without the proper medications needed. This is all too common.

The good news is, now you can get the proper medicine online in a matter of a couple of days. People now days simply secure a same day consultation with a licensed U. S. Physician. After the consultation with a U. S. Physician, your medications are filled by licensed U. S. Pharmacies and shipped out the same day for next day delivery. Millions of Americans pain goes undertreated. Its a fact that people who suffer from chronic pain are not getting the proper medical treatment needed to live a more pain free life.

There's a stigma associated with people seeking help for chronic pain from the medical community in general. Physicians are sometimes more worried about what's in their best interest than the patients. Physicians sometimes just don't believe patients complaining of pain. Some physicians just don't have the knowledge on how to treat chronic pain sufferers.

Due to these circumstances, other avenues in obtaining medication has helped so many people. If people couldn't get the meeds they need online to treat their pain, they would simply have to go without treatment and simply suffer. I am so grateful for the Physicians and Pharmacies who are willing to help those who are truly hurting. You don't have to hurt any longer. Get the help you need to live a more productive, pain free live.

Simply secure a consultation and speak to the physician at the time scheduled. The physician will then write you a prescription necessary to treat your pain, plus two refills. You can also get up to three medications per consultation. For example, being a chronic pain sufferer myself, along with receiving pain medication for my pain, I also am prescribed anxiety and cholestorol medications needed to treat my anxiety and high cholesterol as well. Get the help you need that has helped so many other people with their healthcare needs. The days of waiting, suffering needelessly, and going without medication is over.

Folic Acid for a Healthy Self

by Chelsea Aubin

Everyone knows about vitamins. There are many common vitamins that we are familiar with, and their functions. Vitamin C is known to be good for the skin, while Vitamin A is good the for the eyes. Vitamin D is often called the "sun vitamin". These are the ones that many people think of when they think of vitamins. However, there is one important one that many people don't know of. This vitamin is folic acid, and helps create healthy, new cells.

Most people have found themselves staring at the ingredients list on the cereal box during breakfast. The words printed on the back like riboflavin, folic acid, and pyridoxine, are just words to those who don't know much about vitamins. Your mother has probably advised you to make sure you eat your vegetables, and your doctor to maintain a healthy diet. Both your mother and your doctor, along with the cereal box, are talking about Vitamin B, and a specific group, folic acid.

You can find folic acid in many food groups, and also vitamin supplements. It is advised for women who are pregnant, or could become pregnant take folic acid because it can help prevent birth defects.

You can get enough folic acid in three ways. First off you can choose to take supplements. Must of these vitamin supplements contain 400 micrograms of folic acid. This is a good way because you don't have to worry about getting enough folic acid into your diet; it was all given to you in a supplement.

Another way is to begin your day with folic acid. Choose to eat a breakfast cereal that is full of folic acids. The label will say it contains 100% of recommended daily about of folic acid, which is 400 micrograms.

Lastly, you can also increase your consumption of foods that are rich with folic acids. These foods include enriched cereal, bread pasta, and other grains. Also, adding orange juice and more green vegetables to your diet is suggested.

No matter how old you are foods that are rich in folic acid are good for you. Not only should mothers or mothers to be take folic acid, but also young girls. This way, when the young girls grown up, folic acid will already be a part of their diet. Folic acid is best known as the acid that helps prevents birth defects. One of the concerns in today's maternity environment is the large percentage of children born with neural tube defects or NTDs. NTDs happen when the spinal chord of the fetus doesn't close properly.

Spina bifida is the most common NTD. Spina bifida occurs when a part of the baby's spinal chord remains outside of the body. This birth defect can cause paralysis. The baby could be paralyzed in the legs, and have problems controlling the bladder or bowel movements. Anencephaly is another defect that occurs among babies. This is considered the most serious NTD. Anencephaly causes a baby to be born lacking parts in it's skull and the brain eventually dies. Folic acid can help prevent these defects and can help keep the baby healthy from the first month of pregnancy, to the time of giving birth.

Weight Loss and Exercise in Tough Environmental Conditions

by Lawrence Cole

Working out is working out, right?

Wrong.

Depending on the environmental conditions where you

live, there may be extra precautions that you'll want to consider when trying to lose weight by following a healthy diet and weight loss program.

HIGH ALTITUDES

High altitude environments have less available oxygen then those closer to sea level. One of the effects of such altitude is that the heart must beat faster in order to do the job of delivering oxygen to the muscle tissues both while active and at rest.

Depending on the specific altitude and corresponding acitivity, heart rates may soar as high as 50% above normal. Also, side effects like hyperventilation, dizziness, insomnia, weakness, headache, and irratability are also common in such an environment.

Because of these possible outcomes, people who exercise in high altitudes will definitely want to consult a local physician for clearance before beginning their weight loss exercise program, and may want to lower the intensity of their weight loss cardiovascular activity---especially if they are beginners.

People living in high altitudes will also want to get medical clearance before trying any diet pills, diet patch, or any other weight loss product(s) that may elevate the heart rate to eliminate risk of more complicated health concerns.

EXERCISING IN EXTREME HEAT

Under normal circumstances, the body's temperature is at or around 98°. In areas that have very high temperatures (around 100° or more), the body must adjust to maintain the proper temperature by transferring some of its heat back into the environment.

The primary result of this reaction is that he heart rate will be higher than normal, similar to the effect of being in high altitudes. To best aid the body in maintaining its normalcy under such conditions, make sure to drink 3 to 6 oz. of water for every 10 to 15 minutes of weight loss activity and allowing as much sweat to evaporate as possible. It is also important to wear as close to 100% cotton garments as well as stray away from rubberized or water-proof garments that will prevent sweat evaporation. Light colors should also be worn.

EXERCISING IN THE COLD

To the surprise as many, water replenishment is just as important in the cold as it is in much warmer environments.

The fact of the matter is that water is lost as vapor as inhaled during cardiovascular exercise and other activities that help you to ultimately lose weight. There is also a risk of losing too much body heat once you are done exercising.

To best be prepared to exercise in order to lose weight fast while living in cold environments, make sure to dress in layers to insulate body heat and drink plenty of water. Also wear a hat to limit the amount of body heat that escapes through the head, which is where most body heat is lost from.

Upper Back Exercises for a Strong Back

by Saurabh Jain

The back supports the weight of the upper body and has to be strong to carry out its work unhindered. People focus on strengthening their lower back, but upper back muscles too need toning up. A well toned back looks good and helps in maintaining correct posture. Upper back exercises are a good way of strengthening the upper back. Some effective upper back exercises are mentioned below.

Upper Back Exercises

Women would rather have a well-toned upper body, whereas men prefer a muscular back. Dumbbell pullovers and dumbbell rows are effective upper back exercises.

Dumbbell Pullover:

You will need a narrow workout bench. Lie with the workbench supporting the upper back and neck, and your head leaning over one end. Place one leg each on either side of the bench with feet firmly placed on the ground. Lift the dumbbell over your face with arms stretched out. Slowly lower the dumbbell over your head in an arc; hold, and bring it back to original position. Initially do five repetitions and gradually raise the count to fifteen.

Another variation of this upper back exercise is to hold the dumbbell with bent arms. With elbows bent, slowly lower the dumbbell over your head in an arc; hold, and then gently pull back the dumbbell to original position. Initially do five repetitions and gradually raise the count to fifteen.

Dumbbell Row:

Place the dumbbell on the right side of the bench, and your left leg on the bench with the right foot firmly placed on the floor. Leaning forward, place the left hand on the bench in front of the body. Your back should be in horizontal position. Pick up the dumbbell and raise your arm slowly upwards until your upper arm is in level with your upper body; hold, and take back your arm to the original position. Initially do five repetitions and gradually raise the count to fifteen. Now, repeat the exercise with the left arm.

These upper back exercises are a great way to build a strong upper back that add to the ‘V’ shape of the body.

The Skinny on Fat Burners

by Jim O'Neill

So your thinking about adding fat burners to your daily routine to help you on your way to that slimmer, trimmer body you've always wanted. Hey! Every little bit helps right? So why not fat burners? Well, here is the low-down on fat burners that just might help you to understand what they are and how they work for a weight loss program.

While there are quite a number of products on the market today, many of the ingredients will be similar from one product to another. Caffeine is a drug that is used all over the world mostly for its stimulant effects. Caffeine increases alertness, lowers the perceived exertion of exercise and decreases reaction time.

Caffeine has another effect that few people know about, it also acts as a fat burner! Caffeine works by increasing the rate of fatty acid metabolism and decreasing the rate of carbohydrate metabolism during aerobic exercise. Glycogen is spared after taking in only 150-250mg of caffeine. With an increased reliance on fat and a decreased reliance on glycogen, more calories will be burned from fat if caffeine is taken in prior to exercise.

Keep in mind though that caffeine does have some side effects as well. At higher doses caffeine can cause slowed heart rate, hypertension, nervousness, irritability, insomnia and gastrointestinal distress. It is also a diuretic which causes the kidneys to excrete more fluid than normal which can dehydrate the body. Caffeine will not help you lose weight on its own, but if taken before aerobic exercise it can help increase fat burning and help you exercise longer.

HCA, or hydroxyl citric acid, has the purported effects of inhibiting the conversion of fat by blocking the enzyme ATP citrate lyase and to decrease appetite. Naringin is a substance that is isolated from grapefruit and is an inhibitor of an enzyme that metabolizes caffeine and has been shown to possibly prolong caffeine's fat burning effects.

Synephrine is the active compound in the fruit of a plant called citrus aurantium. Synephrine is chemically similar to the ephedrine found in many cold/allergy medications and a number of weight loss and energy supplements, which contain ma huang. Its purported benefits are to increase the metabolic rate, increase calorie expenditure, promote weight loss and increase energy.

Guggulsterone possibly works in stimulating the thyroid gland. This would speed up the metabolism. It may also lower cholesterol. The trouble is, as with many of these herbs, is that they have not been studied enough to prove that they really work, and that they are safe from any side effects.

Yohimbine raises the metabolism by increasing the release of norepinephrine, one of the adrenal hormones. Studies have shown that this product did have a weight loss effect but as with most other products of this kind, long term use and side effects have yet to be studied.

In essence, fat burners may work to some extent but at what possible long term cost? With the lack of studies done on most of these products as to not only there effectivness, but also there possible side effects, it would be safe to say that it would be best to avoid most of these products. Caffeine, if used in moderate amounts, may well be your best bet for a pre-exercise fat burning aid but use it sparingly and if you feel any of the previously mentioned side effects or any other symptoms from caffeine use, stop and consult your doctor before continuing use.

Turn Down the Suck in Fitness

by Anna Fleet

Exercise is good for you – there’s simply no doubt about it! However, I still meet clients on a daily basis who’ve vowed to dedicate themselves to an exercise program, only to quit after a month. Let’s face it, North Americans start and stop their fitness programs more frequently than they change their underwear.

I understand that buying gym memberships and large pieces of fitness equipment is downright unaffordable to much of the population – especially when that membership looses itself in the back of your wallet or that high-tech treadmill is being used as the most expensive clothes rack your basement has ever seen.

When I became a certified personal trainer I soon learned after talking to clients, and seeing them come to the gym for a while only to suddenly disappear, that the key to a successful fitness program is fun! That’s right exercise should be fun. I mean who ever said it should be a boring, tedious vacuum of your valuable time?

For some reason fitness has negative connotations for many new clients that I’ve met recently. I hear “exercise is just too boring” and “if I exercise I’ll have no social life” all the time when I meet new clients. The fact is that we all lead very busy lives and exercise is often figured into it as an afterthought behind work, family, social outings and even poker night. So let’s face it if exercise is just another leisure activity on your weekly schedule it has to be something you’ll look forward to or you simply won’t stick to it. That’s why I encourage everyone who visits my website, fitnessgear101.com, to switch up the word 'exercise' for ‘leisure activity’. After all, you would be certain to pen a social outing with your girlfriends into your daily planner, so why not get the girls together and go to a spin class or on a power walk?

In this day and age, fitness takes up on average an hour, 4-days a week of the average person’s time. So basically it has to be fun or people simply won’t put in that extra hour. The good news is that entertaining workouts have hit the fitness scene in a big way this year. Many are largely dance-inspired – including belly dancing, cardio strip, pole dancing and salsa dance workouts.

I tried a pole dancing-strip cardio workout with a few of my girlfriends a couple weeks ago, and trust me it had me laughing so hard, that alone gave my abdominal muscles a workout. We started with pole dancing - which is far more challenging than it looks. Believe me, it takes a large amount of upper body strength to keep yourself suspended from a pole, and swinging yourself around it is reasonably cardiovascular. The cardio strip was more like the sweaty high-intensity cardio workouts that I’m used to. The workout mimicked exotic dance movements, so the hip thrusts, kicks and abdominal twisting works parts of your body you didn’t know existed.

See, there’s absolutely no reason why fitness can’t be fun. Start by searching your local community centers and gyms for an activity that you really enjoy. Try tango lessons with your significant other, a bonding session of mother/baby yoga, a high-octane cardio kickboxing session with your best friend – all followed by a healthy lunch. By turning simple daily activities into something more rewarding, you get your fun social gathering and your workout in too!

What Can Honey Do To You?

by Riana Lance

If you feel exhausted and want something fresh to release all your fatigue, why don't you take a teaspoonful of honey and add to your tea, then drink it. You are going to feel better then.

It's not difficult to find honey as it is easy to get and available everywhere in the market. In fact, honey has been a part of the commodity in the ancient century. They used honey for different purposes such as for health treatment, food and beverage, and other useful matters.

Nobody has doubts the usefulness of this sweet viscous fluid produced by bees. Honey makes a good alternative to sugar in food and beverages.

Honey is a source of nutrition. It contains many enzymes, vitamins, minerals and amino acids, as well as fructose, glucose, and water.

In addition, honey also contains antioxidants that can fight free radical from human body. Free radical are molecules that attack human healthy cells.

Current research on honey has shown its beneficial as an antimicrobial agent that can treat different kinds of ailments. The most common use of honey as an antimicrobial agent is to treat wounds, burns and skin ulcers.

Honey can also help seasonal pollen allergies. Consuming a teaspoonful of honey a day for a few months can boost your immune before the allergy season (mostly during autumn) comes.

Thanks to the bees, people can taste the sweetness of honey and take the benefits out of it to improve human's health.

Probably bees are the most helpful insect to human as they produce not only honey, but also something related to honey. Let's see what they are:

Royal Jelly - This is the most nutritious food for the queen bees throughout her life. Luckily, human can take out and consume some of it. Its tastes a little bit bitter, but has so many benefits. It's rich in vitamins, minerals, proteins, amino acid and antibiotic. It can enhance immunity; prevent arthritis and multiple sclerosis; treat asthma; slow down the signs of aging; stimulate hair growth etc.

Beeswax - It's a product from the abdomen of the worker bees. Worker bees have some glands on the inner sides of the ventral shield or plate of each segment of the body. The beeswax is useful to make lipstick, capsule, balm, body lotion, candles or as a wood polish or floor polish.

Bee Pollen -- It's the male seed of a flower blossom that is gathered by the bees. Whoever consumes bee pollen may have more vitality in life. Most athletes like bee pollen because it sustains and enhances their quality performances. For ordinary people, bee pollen can stimulate organs and glands, rejuvenates human body, and brings about a longer life span.

As you can see, all the products "made" by the bees are beneficial for our health. Why don't you try them for your health sake.

The Successful Resolution of Mechanical Low Back Pain (and other disorders of the body)

by Robert Ryles

This article will explain to you the principles that lie behind the successful resolution of mechanical low back pain (and other disorders). They are a series of logical simple to understand steps that underpin successful treatment practice and effective exercise prescription

DIAGNOSIS

The first step is diagnosing what the problem is. This is done by doctors and therapists basically using two methods. The first one being what the patient says or complains of and the second being what is actually found by the practitioner from their physical examination.

Both of these are vital suppliers of information for a correct diagnosis. The sum total of all the information gleaned from both methods should build a picture of the exact problem that leads on to the diagnosis.

Sometimes it is possible to ascertain an EXACT diagnosis and other times it is not. Having an exact diagnosis is desirable but not absolutely essential to successful treatment. What is important is that the existence or absence of certain conditions is ascertained so that the correct treatment and advice can be followed.

In the case of back pain it is important to be able to put the cause of the pain down to a mechanical problem affecting the back. With reference to back pain there are certain conditions from other body systems that give pain in the back and these must be ruled out before treatment of the back can begin

PAIN RESOLUTION

Before normal movement and function can be looked at the aspect of pain must be considered. This is because in the initial stages of an episode of back pain the pain is there to prevent further damage occurring. It is important that this pain is allowed to settle and further damage is not caused. A few days of the CORRECT rest is normally sufficient to achieve this. Longer than this and there are likely to be more negative effects than positive from resting unless a specific reason is given by a qualified medical person. There are modalities that are helpful in resolving pain such as medication and electrotherapy that can be beneficial.

MOVEMENT RE EDUCATION

The next stage is the regaining of the normal amount of movement in the back. This is the stage at which most problems occur. This is normally for a number of common reasons. These generally revolve around the fact that there is a degree of overlap between the pain stage and this stage and people are unsure of when to begin moving, which specific movements to do, how many to do and for how long.

It is here that is so often the KEY CRITICAL POINT in the recovery process because with the CORRECT ADVICE INSTRUCTION AND ENCOURAGEMENT regarding movement and exercise therapy most back pain can be improved. If this point is missed problems begin and little by little get bigger and more difficult to resolve until ultimately if left long enough, which often can be just a matter of weeks, you can become a chronic back pain patient, with all its associated problems.

STRENGTH RE EDUCATION

The next stage once the movement is well on the way to recovery is the re education of the muscles that control the area. Here again the skill is knowing when to begin the exercises, which ones to do, how many and for how long. With the back you may be lucky and be able to resume your normal everyday activities without needing any specific strengthening exercises. There are however great many people with low back pain who would be so much better and be much more able with again the CORRECT EXERCISE PRESCRIPTION. For some it would undoubtedly totally solve their problem.

NORMAL FUNCTION ACTIVITY RESUMATION

Following the successful resolution of pain, movement and strength all these three come together to allow the patient to resume their normal everyday activities. Here again the key is the skilful and correct advice as to how much how soon. If the previous three stages have been addressed properly this stage will follow naturally but the correct advice is paramount in preventing re injury.

SUMMARY

So there we have it. The basic stages behind the successful resolution of mechanical low back pain. This can essentially be transferred to many other musculo skeletal problems. Although in black and white it appears relatively simple do not confuse something being simple and think it means it is unskilled. It requires specific knowledge at each of the particular stages.

In fact I would go as far as to say categorically how important it is to get as far as possible a definitive diagnosis of your problem before engaging in any form of therapy whether by a third party or self help.

Healthy And Nutritious Benefits From Yogurt

by Sharon Hopkins

It has been given different names but the nutritious value of yogurt makes it useful for our continuous and profoundly used up body. It should be part of your daily diet as it helps with increasing ways of creating a clean digestive system. The process of making yogurt must have developed somewhere in Asia or Europe as there is a huge supply of milk.

In Europe and Asia, cow’s milk is very prevalent; buffalo’s milk is also used in India. In Russia goats and sheep’s milk are a good source of providing milk from which the rich and smooth yogurt is formed. Yogurt can be made by the use of Soya which is considered as a very healthy drink.

By being an excellent desert, yogurt also happens to be very nutritive with many golden benefits written to its name. It has all the essential source of proteins, vitamins and minerals. These help to create a proper balance for your body. High content of calcium also proves to be excellent for our digestive system. It helps it cooling down your system rather than burning it up with acidity problems. As the proteins are easily digested you can have this very easily which tends to do wonders to your body.

It can also be made into butter milk wherein 90% water is used, but the taste happens to be very good for your mouth and your stomach accepts it easily. People who have tender digestive system can have this daily which would help them tremendously. As the digestabilty factor of the yogurt is better in comparison to the milk due to which you can have it very easily. It is been said that consuming at least 250 gms yogurt a day would help to improve your thiamine. This thiamine helps in maintaining your appetite as well as the continuous growth of your body.

Acidity can be easily fought by drinking butter milk. If this butter milk happens to be sour it turns out be even better as it helps in fighting the influx of lactic acid in the system. You can use yogurt in different forms which makes it more interesting and also very appetizing for many children and adults too. It also contains Vitamin B12 which is very good for your body. There are three types of yogurt regular, low-fat, and skimmed milk.

As yogurt contains live bacteria it proves to be very useful for your body providing all the necessary health benefits needed by you. It has been tested that people who have yogurt thrice a week can increase their life span than the one's who had it just once a week. Your immunity increases by having yogurt. It has a fine resistance to fight diseases. Eating yogurt helps with vaginal yeast infection. It also helps in weight loss which for many may be a very significant problem. Lactobacillus is a pro-biotic bacterium which helps in curing arthritis as well as preventing it.

Sharon Hopkins handles many websites relating to natural home remedies such as http://www.home-remedies-for-you.com, which has lot of information on home based natural cures and remedies. Yogurt can be easily made and has been used for different purposes benefiting our body.

Learning about Ayurveda

by Tania Jain

It is the science of preventive health (take care of health so that disease does not get a chance to get in) and the living habits that check over indulgence in physical senses, going against conscience and natural resistance to the call of the soul (refusal to enjoy the present moment) .

Ayurvedic Treatment

What if when someone is already ill? It deals with internal medicine (kayachikitsa), surgery (Shalyachikitsa), Treating eye, ear, nose and throat (shalakyachikitsa), Pediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics treatment (kaumarabhritya) and mental health (bhutavidya).

Body Elements & Constitution (Prakriti)

There are five elements of which the human body is made up of: akasha (ether), Vayu (air), Agni (Fire), Jala (Water) and Prithvi (earth).

Because of the above five elements, all human beings are constituted with a combination of two or three primary ones. Those are called body humors or Doshas: Kapha, Vata and Pitta. Any person is easy to treat with the identification of his/her category.

Vata category is combination of space and air elements: People are fearful, illogical and insecure. Skin is dry. They have thin hair. They have dark brown or grey eyes. Vata activates the nervous system, hearing and speech and the persons is a great enthusiast with creativity. However, the state of his mind gets imbalanced easily because of which he gets diseases like insomnia, cramps and constipation.
Pitta category is fire element: These people are achievers, intellectual, fiery, angry, judgmental, with clear voice and precise expression. They have soft and fine hair. Eyes are blue, grey and hazel. They are good leaders and warm personality when healthy. Because of emphasis on metabolism and anger, they suffer from acidity, ulcers and rashes and also thinning of hair occurs.

Kapha category is (water and earth element: They have thick lustrous hair. Eyes are blue or brown. People have great endurance capacity with calm and steady mind. They are capable of forgiveness and intense love. Sometimes they are greedy and possessive. Kapha is the lubricant that keeps the joints working, keeps the body vibrant and balanced with immunity. Too much of it leads to lethargy, congestion, allergies and weight gain.

Nature of ailments

After the Prakriti is decided, one should know the nature of the diseases(Vikriti). It is imbalance obviously, but there are tow extremes to every imbalance, either deficiency or excess. Those are heavy-light, slow-sharp, cold-hot, unctuous-dry, smooth-rough, solid-liquid, soft-hard, stable-mobile, subtle-gross, and non-slimmy-slimmy. When corrected, Prakriti or original constitution is restored.

These 20 characteristics, with regards to one’s basic constitution, will decide the treatment. These may be caused by wrong foods causing improper digestion, wrong sleeping habits, improper mindset, anxiety etc.

The other type of ailment is clogging or blockage (Ama) for life energy to circulate for vitality. When this is corrected, it produces energy, perfect immunity, and physical strength and hence a general sense of bliss which is summarized in Ayurveda in one word called Ojas.

Some Herbs and Minerals
Malabar nut: bronchitis, asthma, boosting immune systems
Bael: Digestive system
Garlic: lipids and cholesterol
Asparagus: Female reproductive system and lactation
Aloe Vera: Hair and skin treatment
Neem: blood purifier and anti-fungal treatment
Sensitive Plant: Gynecological disorder, piles, bleeding

Boosting Immune System is One Step Toward Preventing Alzheimer’s Disease

by Frank Mangano

Drugs have been used to ease the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and give people a better quality of life. Many such therapies are designed to fight the effects of the build up of amyloid proteins that form a plaque around brain neurons. If only this plaque could be prevented from forming in the first place, people would have a much lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

Recent research out of Canada suggests that the bone marrow holds the key to cleansing amyloid plaque from the brain. Microglia derived from the bone marrow is able to attack the most toxic forms of this plaque. The key then is to increase this natural scavenger and get it to release from the bone marrow so it can do its job. This natural defense mechanism is now thought to be triggered by boosting the immune system, according to the trials conducted on laboratory mice.

What are the best ways to boost the immune system and cleanse potentially harmful plaques that could be building up in your brain? A diet that is balanced and full of antioxidants is the primary way. Here are some other tips to getting the best immune system building nutrition and reducing the factors that weaken it.

1. Get Your Essential Fatty Acids. This is the number one immune system builder. Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids are necessary to optimal health. A fish oil supplement is the best source of fatty acids since American diets don’t normally contain enough fish to provide these nutrients.

2. Take Care of Your Lymphatic System. This is the system of organs, nodes, and vessels that help cleanse the body continuously. Using the Chinese herb, Ligustrum (nu zhen zi) increases bone marrow production of lymphocytes and benefits the thymus.

3. Get Enough Exercise. Exercise increases the production of T lymphocyte and reduces stress, both of which support a strong immune system.

4. Look at Your Lifestyle. Drinking alcohol and caffeine and smoking cigarettes all weaken the immune system. Also, excessive stress for long periods of time or not getting enough sleep makes you more susceptible to all kinds of disease.

5. Look at Your Environment. Household cleaners, pesticides, and food additives all suppress the immune system. If there is an abundance of these types of factors in your life, all the good nutrition may not be enough to counteract their impact.

Choose Your Cover: Finding Effective Sun Protection

by Danielle White

With all of us feverishly trying to keep up with the latest fads Hollywood exports, finally there is a fashion tip that will truly enhance our lives.

Recently, Tom Cruise’s former sidekick Nicole Kidman was quoted by the Associated Press as saying: “I wish that I hadn’t been born with red hair and fair skin” as she is concerned about the amount sun exposure and its direct link to an increased risk for skin cancer. She should know, too. After all, she hails from Australia where skin cancer is an exploding epidemic.

Subsequently, Australia is the leading the world in heightening the quality of skin cancer prevention education and proactive sun safety behavior. Truth be told, skin cancer is the world’s most common cancer. Americans are no exception to the rule either! Every hour someone in the United States dies from skin cancer, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (www.AAD.org). Perhaps, Kidman’s example will encourage the propagation of a new fashion wave - sun protective clothing (http://www.sunsavvy.net/).

Whereas, sun protective clothing (also known as ultraviolet radiation protective clothing; or “UVR”) is widely used in Australia, Europe, and South Africa, it is still relatively unknown here in the U.S. Sun protective clothing, however, is a highly effective option for individuals to protect themselves from the harmful affects of UV-rays all day, every day.

If you consider that the average white 100% cotton t-shirt is equivalent to only a SPF 6 (which provides about 14% worth of sun protection), clearly there is a need for light-weight, functional, stylish, economical, clothing that also provides exceptional protection from over-exposure to the sun.

On the other hand, sun protective clothing blocks out more than 97.5% of UV rays (which is an equivalent to a SPF 30 sunscreen). This is considered by the Skin Cancer Foundation to be “the best of the best” as it were when it comes to effective sun protection. If you consider that a SPF 20 sunscreen is allowing only five out of every 100 UV protons to reach your skin; it is 95% protective, than sun protective clothing is quite simply the most revolutionary new product available on the market today for those looking for a viable, yet extremely effective, way to protect themselves and their loved ones from sun damage.

Dermatologist-oncologist, Sancy A. Leachman of the Tom C. Mathews Jr. Familial Melanoma Research Clinic at The Huntsman Cancer Institute (www.HuntsmanCancer.org) recommends that everyone use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 15 for daily, year-round use; SPF 30 is recommended if we are outdoors between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. when UV rays are most intense.

SPF 30 sunscreen is also highly recommended for those of us who possess multiple risk factors for skin cancer such as blonde or red hair, blue or green eyes, fair or sensitive skin, many atypical moles, and even family history of skin cancer – like Nicole Kidman. Wearing sun protective clothing, coupled with proper year-round use of sunscreens, is the quite simply the best protection available, Sancy says. And her colleagues in the field of dermatological medicine agree.

“Appropriate sun apparel should offer effective protection against both short term and long term photo damage [such as wrinkling, skin cancer, and even cataracts],” says Dr. J.M. Mentor, who also teaches dermatology at the Morehouse School of Medicine (http://www.msm.edu/). In other words, effective sun safety apparel ought to protect against both UV-B and UV-A rays, and sun protective products such as those specially manufactured by Stingray in Australia, do exactly that.

Stingray is the original sun protection clothing company to specialize in UV protection swimwear and daily attire for children and adults. “As a result of listening to the needs of our many customers, we are able to deliver products that take the ‘sting out of the sun’s rays,’” says Wendy Lister, Managing Director of Stingray. “[People] are now getting the best possible UV protection.” Those living at high altitudes or near the equator, have the highest risk in for skin cancer, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

Glen and Liisa Tomson, both natives of South Africa, know first-hand the devastating toll sun damage can take on our health. As such, they have recently partnered up with The Cancer Crusaders Organization (www.CancerCrusaders.org) in a five-year international skin cancer prevention education campaign called “Only Skin Deep?” This program aims to actively engage parents and young adults in the fight against the world’s most common, yet preventable, cancer.

“We see a great and pressing need for increased awareness and education here in the U.S.,” says Glen Tomson. “Too many times my wife and I will be at the pool, and see all these children running around sun burnt. Often, we’ll offer shade [clothing] and sunscreen to the parents so they can better protect their children.” Glen and Liisa, in addition to being entrepreneurs and experts, are parents and realize the importance of instilling the practice of sunscreen usage and the wearing of sun protective clothing at a young age so as to develop a lifelong habit of sun safety behavior.

In fact, the American Academy of Dermatology reports that sustaining just one severe “blistering” sunburn before age 18 increases one’s likeliness of a future skin cancer diagnosis by an estimated 60%. In other words, 80% of one’s lifetime skin damage occurs in the first 18 years of life. This is of particular concern the mountain states where high elevation exposes us to more intense UV irradiation.

Dr. Leachman illustrates it best by saying, “Someone standing on the summit of Mt. Timpanogos [Utah] will burn 66-to-77 times faster than someone standing on a beach in Los Angeles [California].” Lechman adds, “Skin cancer incidence is increasing at an alarming rate here in the United States, so it is important that we all take proper precautions to protect ourselves.”

The AAD solidifies Leachman’s remarks, reporting 1.3-million Americans will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer this year. The risk is real,” Leachman says. “There is a real need for people to take necessary precautions and to teach patients how to advocate for themselves [in reducing their risk for skin cancer].”
