Your Brain On Stress

by Susan Scharfman

Neurosurgeons and neurologists have studied the human brain for centuries. Today, they agree there are two halves, or cerebral hemispheres. The left side controls the right half, and Eureka! The right side controls the left. Apparently the left hemisphere, specializing in speech and language comprehension, is the technical detail-oriented area that is logic-dominant. The right brain is regarded as the intuitive, non-verbal emotional chamber where the creative arts reside.

In my unlearned opinion the word “creative” should be applied to both hemispheres. A creative accountant or financial consultant can be the most creative person you’ll meet in your lifetime. But what the bleep do I know? We are told each hemisphere can be divided into four lobes of the cortex (the outer layer’s gray matter): occipital, parietal, temporal and frontal, the functions of which can be found in textbooks and on the Web. If that sounds escapist and simplistic, it is, and I am far too incompetent, lazy and right brain to further expand on something of which I know little.

In attempting to explain to us dip-heads with half a brain, scientists posit that both sides of the brain communicate with each other through a thin stalk of nerve fibers. After resolving a complex problem in the logical left side, tiny impulses (messages) are sent across to the right hemisphere where our masterpiece is born and the genius cries out, “aha!” But what about that intangible entity that departs the concrete material brain when the brain dies?

I used to suffer from recurring migraine headaches that were so debilitating I would do anything to put an end to them. When someone suggested I participate in a headache study at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York I immediately agreed. The study consisted of three doctors who fired questions at me while they made notes of my physical reaction and verbal response to each question. I will not repeat some of my vocal responses, but the exercise was so stressful it produced the worst headache of my life, and sent me fleeing the scene. Eventually, through meditation and a good neurologist, the headaches subsided and are now infrequent. But the exercise was revealing.

Most individuals lean more heavily to one style of thinking. Fewer are more “whole-brained.” Since kindergarten, when faced with a question or problem-solving situation involving numbers, I’d panic and go into high stress mode, which is what happened at Mt. Sinai. Though in other stress related matters I reacted within normal boundaries, that series of impulses connecting the right brain with the left abandoned me during number solving. Everyone experiences some form of (bad) stress in his or her life and I am no exception. But the demon of mathematics plagued and puzzled me for years until I learned that I am more right brain than left, the more I obsessed over a perceived inadequacy the more stressful it became, and anyone can achieve a more balanced method of thinking if they choose.

Dr. Hans Selye, a well-known endocrinologist widely considered “the father of stress research,” devoted his life to understanding the nature of stress. Through scientific investigation he and his colleagues proved that there is good stress (a terrific tennis game or passionate kiss) as well as bad stress, one that results in illness or disease. A pioneer in his field, Selye identified the specific part of the brain known as the hypothalamic and pituitary gland, which is responsible for secreting the hormones that affect all our physiological processes. His numerous books include, “Stress Without Distress” and “The Stress of Life.”

According to Selye, the physical changes occurring during meditation are the opposite of the body's reaction to stress. In my case, I had suffered from post traumatic stress, which also contributed to the migraines. Many people including myself have practiced long-term meditation techniques with positive results. I gradually began to have fewer headaches each week, then fewer each month. But I also discovered that when settling into a state of relaxed alertness, I experienced something beyond the effects of hypothalamus hormones on the physical body.

As is often the case with prayer, there appears to be an unbounded intangible connection to a silent entity within that has no verbal expression, yet often can produce indescribable bliss, and have a rejuvenating effect on the physical body, coupled with a steady manner of dealing with stress when in activity. There are numerous meditation techniques and there is no single one that is better than another. Whatever works for the individual is the right one. One thing is certain. The human brain is a great deal more than the sum of its parts.

Giddy When Lifting Weight In Gym? Training Big Muscle Groups Cause Nausea?

by Chris Chew

Ask any body builder and everyone will say they will feel light headed, nauseous and even sometimes even puke when they train big muscle groups with exercises such as squats and dead lifts. Some great bodybuilders even take pride that they puke after an intensive bout of weightlifting as an indication that they have had a fantastic workout. But to many, these symptoms are unpleasant, disruptive and could be even be dangerous and cause injuries. Perhaps, you may also have experienced these symptoms as well.

What happened? Well, there could be several causes.

• First of all, you may have eaten or drunk too much before your gym workout. So you blood is channeled to your digestive organs for your digestive process. But when you begin to exercise intensively especially on big muscle groups, a lot of blood is channeled away from your digestive organs to the muscles. When that happens, food is now in your digestive system left unattended and therefore undigested and thus causing you to feel nauseous.

• Your blood sugar level may be low. This could happen when you are on a low carbohydrate caloric restriction diet or have not eaten for sometime and is now lifting heavy weights. You will feel giddy, tired and may even develop a headache and suffering muscular weakness. It simply boils down to a decreased of energy level for not having enough energy nutrients prior to your workout.

• The most common cause of nausea when weight lifting is low blood pressure. It could be inherent that you have low blood pressure and if not, it is caused by change of body position. Have you ever felt giddy when you are sitting stationary for sometime then suddenly gotten up and stretch? Well, if you have had that experience, then the same logic and science applies. The sudden fall of blood pressure happens when you are in a squatting position and then suddenly bursting upwards to a standing position with the blood pooled in your lower body and not sending the blood fast enough to your upper body and your brain.

These are some of the reasons why many of us will experience giddiness, nausea and even puke when we do exercises like squats and dead lifts with heavy weights and when working on big muscle groups.

Now that we know the reasons, we can avoid these unpleasant symptoms by taking necessary precautions during our gym workout on heavy weight days.

Back Pain: A Result Of Poor Posture Or Muscle Strain

by Saurabh Jain

Back pain is a common phenomenon and most of the people are suffering from it. However, a large portion of them are unaware of the reasons or the causes of this problem. A strain in the muscles is a major cause of the pain the back. Although back related pain may emerge suddenly, it may be caused by a problem which has plagued us for a long time.

Back related pain is generally not a serious problem and disappears quickly in most of the cases. However, medical advice is essential in cases where the pain persists for a long time. It is a general notion that bed rest is the best cure for this pain. But evidence has shown that rest does not aid in the recovery of a person suffering from backache. It is much better if one carries on with normal activities while taking some measures for relieving the pain.

It is one of the most common ailments with 8 out of 10 people experiencing it at one or the other point of time in their life. Pain can be acute, recurrent or chronic. Most of the people suffering from back pain fall in the first category wherein the pain vanishes in about six weeks and home remedies prove to be very effective. In the case of the recurrent category, the pain reappears after some time while chronic pain lasts for a longer period of time.

The intensity of back pain varies from person to person. It can vary from a dull ache to a searing pain and its onset may be sudden, without any reason. Severe and recurrent pain should not be ignored and proper medical advice should be sought. People experiencing difficulty in passing urine or having numbness in the back or the genital area, weakness and a shooting pain in the leg or feeling unstable while standing should consult a physician immediately.

Back Pain Remedies

Massage is an effective way of reducing back pain. The incidence or the severity of the pain can be reduced by finding out the exact reason for the pain, eliminating or modifying the factors/situations causing pain and trying to find the best possible remedy. A poor posture or manual activities such as lifting, bending and twisting can result in back related pain.

Early recognition of symptoms, proper treatment and appropriate rehabilitation measures are very important and help in minimizing the problems caused by back pain. A person suffering from back pain may need to get the following tests done to find out the exact cause:

(a) Blood test

(b) Urine examination

(c) Ultrasonography of abdomen and pelvis

(d) An X-ray of the lumbar or sacral region

(e) MRI of the spine

(f) Examination of rectum, prostate, genito urinary organs.

Several over the counter medicines are available for the treatment of various back pains. Acetaminophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are the two commonly recommended drugs that for people suffering from low back pain. In case of acute pain, the doctors may recommend narcotic pain medications or muscle relaxants.

You Don't Need A Fitness Personal Trainer - Personal View Of A Fitness Trainer

by Chris Chew

If you are looking for fitness personal trainers on the net, you will come across many many health and fitness websites extolling the virtues of why you should hire a personal trainer to achieve your fitness and health goals didn’t you? If you are reading this article of which you are doing now, you are probably surprised to find why a fitness personal trainer like me is telling you why you don’t need one. You will probably think that I am crazy. Perhaps I am. Well, read on and you may discover that I am not as crazy as you think after all.

• You don’t need a fitness personal trainer because you hated the commitment that entails once you hire a personal trainer. Anyway, you have been working out for many years without any commitment to anyone, even to yourself and that is why, you only workout as and when you are pleased. Well, you do concede that the results you get are never satisfactory and of course you are frustrated with your results. But what the heck, you prefer to waste time, waste gym membership fees and enjoy getting frustrated. You are entitled to your liberty.

• You don’t need a fitness personal trainer because you hated someone to push and encourage you so that you can achieve your health and fitness goals much faster. Your idea of going to the gym is to socialize and to chat up girls. So why should you subject yourself to a regimen planned by a personal trainer who can sculpt your body to be more attractive and desirable to the girls you wanted to chat up? Your beer belly will do just fine. Girls just love big beer bellies you justify to yourself. So who needs a flat tummy with those ugly six pack abs? You certainly don’t.

• You don’t need a fitness personal trainer because you believe in the precept of “no pain no gain.” So if you exercise using the wrong form and techniques resulting in painful or even worse, permanent injuries, well, that is pain isn’t it? So therefore with pain, there will be gains. Hmmm, such profound reasoning that even the great philosopher Confucius will be confused if he is still alive eh?

• You don’t need a fitness personal trainer because you pay your income taxes. So without someone to guide and train you scientifically, you will not lose much body and visceral fat, so you will still have that high blood pressure, that potential stroke and heart attack, so that you will eventually land in a government subsidized hospital and so that some of the taxes which you have paid will be utilized by yourself. That is great clever thinking eh? You are glad that even without a PHD in business studies, you can figure out how to get a wonderful return of investments from your taxes paid

• You don’t need a fitness personal trainer because you believe in conforming to the society. After all, most people in your country are overweight and not exactly glowing with good health, then why should you be otherwise? You are delighted to be like most people, obese and unhealthy. Hey, you are a good citizen aren’t you?

• You don’t need a fitness personal trainer because you can spy on people who hired personal trainers in your gym. You eavesdrop on their trainers giving instructions and then you secretly work out according to what you have overheard not realizing that each and everyone is different and workout plans are to be tailored to each individual condition factoring in other issues like lifestyle, dietary habits and even the choice of exercises. You prefer to “monkey see, monkey do” and eventually falling painfully off the tree. Or should I say falling off the Empire State Building where the mighty King Kong fell?

• The most compelling reason why you don’t need a fitness personal trainer is because you have downloaded my “Burn Fat Build Muscles Fast” e-books and now you have a personal trainer in your hands. By following the instructions in the books you have transformed your body tremendously and are now the proud owner of an attractive and desirable body not to say you are also glowing with excellent health and fitness. Whoever said that you need to hire fitness personal trainers in order to own a lean mean attractive muscular body that only others can dream of must be crazy, don’t you agree?

Pilates Helps Strengthen the Back!

by Ev Margolin

The health benefit of Pilates have become and is still becoming recognized all around the world, particularly in North America. Pilates has become the savior for many suffering from back pain. What makes Pilates so good for the back? Well, it strengthens and restores any damaged muscle or soft tissue through the slow, balanced movements of each exercise.

Actually, the focus upon postural muscles in each Pilates individual exercise movement helps to maintain balance that is essential to providing spinal support. Each exercise places emphasis on neutral alignment of the spine – restoring the strength of the deep postural muscles that assist in maintaining the alignment of the back. This balance helps to prevent but also stop any back pain an individual may be suffering from.

The slow, structured movements developed by founder Joseph Pilates has proven its success over the years making this system world renowned. Joseph Pilates not only developed exercises that could be performed on a simple mat, but he also developed a rehabilitation program using springs in machines to create equipment that uses resistance, strength and slow movements to rehabilitate and strengthen the muscles of those who came to him for assistance in restoring their physical health. His emphasis on breathing, mental focus and slow flowing movements with and without the use of his machines have been a pivotal point in restoring the spine and back of many individuals who followed his unique exercise program.

How Pilates Mat Exercises Help the Spine:

The focus of the Pilates mat exercises is to improve the strength of the muscles in the trunk, abs and hips. The balanced movement of resistance helps improve flexibility especially in the spine and hips – which are common areas that become injured with age. By restoring strength and agility to these areas, the body is more able to stay strong and avoid injury.

Pilates Equipment: Advantages for Optimal Health:

The most popular pieces of equipment commonly used in many Pilates classes are the Wunda Chair, the Reformer and the Cadillac. If you’ve never heard of these pieces of equipment, let me explain:

The Wunda Chair is basically a small bench-like platform consisting of a bar attached with springs. Exercises are performed by pushing on the bar while you are either standing or sitting on the bench. This creates resistance that is essential to improving muscle strength. Another popular piece of Pilates equipment is the Reformer which consists of a sliding platform that has springs attached to one end of the frame. The platform is moved by either pulling on ropes or pushing off from the stationary bar – once again creating resistance and balance. The slow movement of each exercise motion blends effort, resistance, flexibility and strength in an exercise motion that emphasizes balance, which is essential to healthy spine alignment.

And the last piece of Pilates equipment known as the Cadillac consists of a padded platform which consists of a cage-like frame above it leading to various bars and straps that are attached by springs. You attach these straps to the hands and feet to perform exercise motions that target the hips, back and abdominal areas. These movements and the equipment are arranged so strategically so that one can restore and improve balance and strength of the back as well as the rest of the body.

Evan Margolin shares his passion for salsa through his premier salsa studio DancsSF, in the Bay Area. Evan says, “If you want to achieve the Dancer’s body, you have got to try PilatesforDancers.” (http://www.pilatesfordancers.com/)

How To Lose Weight Easily, Quickly And Naturally Program - Natural Weight Loss

by Chris Chew

It is easy to lose weight quickly and naturally if you have a systematic weight loss program. Many people failed to lose weight successfully because of the natural tendency to choose easy quick fix programs such as going on drastic diets, popping diet pills or persuaded to buy some exercise gadgets that simply do not work. In my other articles, I have addressed these issues and why such easy quick fix programs simply do not work in the long term and will not repeat them here.

To lose weight quickly, naturally and easily, you have to combine a healthy eating habit, correct cardio and strengthening exercises. We shall touch on the subject of how to lose weight quickly and naturally through a healthy eating program in this article.

• Increase Your Metabolism – Eat 5-6 small meals daily. It has been scientifically proven that by eating frequently, you will raise your body’s natural metabolism. That means your body will burn more fat naturally. You become a fat burning machine all day long.

• Eat Less Calories – Although you need to increase meal frequency to lose weight naturally, you must be mindful of your caloric consumption. Calories consumed must not exceed calories expanded for your daily energy. So keep your meals small and cut down on dietary fats as each gram of fat contains 9 calories whereas each gram of protein and carbohydrate contains only 4 calories.

• Avoid Starchy And Processed Flour Foodstuffs – These foodstuffs are easy to digest and turn into sugar rapidly and in turn get converted to body fat if these sugar calories are not used up as energy quickly. So ditch your cakes, cookies, pizzas, pastas, white rice etc Replace them with high fiber bread, legumes, brown rice, grains and nuts instead. So stay away from fast food restaurants as most fast food menus offer such foodstuff.

• Avoid All Sugary and Soft Drinks – Reason is obvious. Most if not all of these kind of drinks are heavily laced with sugar and sugar gets converted to body fat very quickly. You have to run on the treadmill for 20-30 minutes just to burn away a can’s worth of calories in a soft drink. Just imagine how much body fat you will accumulate if you drink just three cans of soft drinks a day along with 2 cups of sugar added coffee?

• Avoid All Forms Of Alcohol – There are about 7 calories in a gram of alcohol. Alcohol calories have zero nutritional value. They are just mere empty calories. Indulging in regular alcohol consumption not only wrecks your health, it will set back your weight loss program completely.

Oh….so you think this eating habit is difficult to implement or that you will miss your sugary foodstuffs and soft drinks? Not to worry. You may experience some withdrawal symptoms at first but after a week or two, you will be weaned off your sugar and simple carbohydrate cravings. Once your addictions to these foods are curbed, you will no longer have your sweet tooth and will naturally avoid such foodstuff.

Just by following these healthy eating habits, you will start to lose weight easily, quickly and naturally. Include cardio and weight lifting exercises into your weight loss program and your weight loss will be permanent.

What Causes Osteoporosis?

by Gray Rollins

According to the U.S. News & World Report Health Center, “Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to break. Literally meaning ‘porous bone,’ it results in an increased loss of bone mass and strength.” Osteoporosis debilitates millions of people every year, but there is good news – prevention is possible!

The skeletal structure of the body provides support for our muscles and protection for our vital organs; our bones are also a storehouse of calcium and other minerals. More than 99 percent of the body’s calcium is stored in our bones and teeth, the other 1 percent travels throughout our body in our blood. Calcium is vital for heart and muscle function.

Our skeletons are made up of a smooth, tough outer layer of dense bone, a spongier mid section and a soft core of marrow where new cells are made to rebuild our bones. Our bones are constantly changing because our bodies depend on a steady supply of calcium to function properly. When we don’t get enough calcium from our regular diet our bodies break down and rebuild bone to meet our needs. This is called “bone remodeling.”

Many things can influence bone remodeling, like injury, illness, medications, exercise, diet, hormonal changes, smoking, heavy drinking and of course the normal aging process. When the body requires more calcium than we are able to consume, or if we aren’t able to store the calcium we consume adequately it is leached from the spongy mid layer of our bones. They gradually lose their density making them weak and porous, and more prone to fractures. This is osteoporosis.

Most of our bone mass is established before the age of 30, and after about age 35, as a part of the normal aging process, our bodies begin to breakdown our bone faster than we are able to rebuild it. The natural decline in hormonal production is another contributing factor. When women reach menopause and their ovaries stop producing estrogen and bone loss accelerates. In men a reduction in the hormone testosterone also encourages bone loss.

There is no cure for osteoporosis, so disease prevention is vital to maintaining bone density. There are three key areas to consider when it comes to preventing osteoporosis: diet, lifestyle choices and medications.

To maintain strong healthy bones a diet sufficient in calcium and vitamin D are important from preadolescence and throughout adulthood. Calcium needs become greater in older adults whose bodies can no longer rebuild bone mass. Recent studies suggest that bone fractures can be reduced by 30-50% in individuals with low dietary calcium simply with the addition of a calcium and vitamin D supplement.

A few easy lifestyle changes can also influence our risk of getting osteoporosis. Smoking, low body weight and a lack of exercise are all contributing factors to raising our susceptibility to the disease. Weight-bearing exercises like walking, stair climbing, dancing and weight training help to increase bone density, keep muscles flexible and ensure better physical balance in people of all ages. Exercise also helps to regulate body weight to a healthy level. There is a direct link between tobacco use and lower bone density so smoking cessation is also recommended.

The use of medications can and does play an important role in the prevention of osteoporosis. Calcium and vitamin D supplements as mentioned previously are often paired with bisphosphonates like Alendronate and Risedronate, selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) like Raloxifene, and hormonal replacements like Estrogen and Testosterone. All medications have some side effects and these are best discussed with your doctor.

Though there is no known cure for osteoporosis there is hope and help in preventing this common and often debilitating disease of the elderly. By starting now and working to prevent bone density loss you’ll have a stronger, healthier future.

Hoodia Diet Pill: Hoodia Gordonii Or Voodoo To You And I

by James Zeller

For every diet pill fad there are millions of disappointed users that have been cheated by the guru charlatan with the latest wonder working diet wiz pill. With the reflex flinch of one of those victims we poke the stick of revelation at hoodia.

Walking the Kalahari Desert doesn’t seem the obvious place to start a diet when thirst is foremost on the mind. Native San Bushmen featured in the movie “The Gods Must Be Crazy” live and thrive here for real. Thousands of years ago their ancestors discovered the magical properties of a specific cactus that thwarts hunger pains. 10, 000 times stronger than glucose, hoodia fools the brain into thinking you are full and not hungry.

This all-natural appetite suppressant is made from pure hoodia cactus pulp and seeds. Hoodia gordonii is the specific cactus that has the appetite suppressant qualities. Hoodia can be taken as a pill, powder or a tea. Obesity has never had a foe of this gigantic magnitude, than that of the natural herbal hoodia diet pill!

The secreted cactus, called Xhoba by San Bushmen, collection sat in a laboratory for 30 years after it was discovered before its’ properties were analyzed. The mega-behemoth pharmaceutical company, Pfizer (producers of Viagra) introduced “hoodia” to the media while they were in preliminary studies. Pfizer terminated all research on hoodia when terms could not be agreed upon with Phytopharm that owned the patent. Phytopharm bought up the rights from the San Bushmen of Kalahari to harvest, test and produce a laboratory drug called P57. This synthetic Hoodia has the same active ingredient as the real cactus and contains the previously unknown molecule named P57. Phytopharm decided to sell the use of their patent to Unilever, which owns Slim Fast. The sale was for 21 million U.S. plus royalties, that remain undisclosed. The hoodia laced P 57 products by Slim Fast may show up on the market in 2007.

The hoodia works in this way: In your mid-brain called the hypothalamus; you have glucose sensing nerve cells. As you ingest food, your blood sugar rises, and the glucose sensing nerve cells activate, sending an electrical signal that we recognize as, “now I am full”.

Hoodia has been tested and proven to work overwhelmingly against the double-blind placebo check. Individuals taking pure hoodia extract diet pills ate 1000 fewer calories than those in the placebo check. 3500 calories = 1 pound of body fat. So every three and a half days you would lose a pound of fat by taking Hoodia.

There are natural products for sale that are made from real hoodia pulp that are from hoodia farms or naturally collected cactus. The hoodia plant may take up to six years to grow to harvestable size from seed. In 2005 CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna) decided to include hoodia gordonii in their list of protected cactus from South Africa and a permit is required to export this cactus from its’ homeland. It is estimated that by 2010 there will be a shortage of this product as demand outgrows the supply.

Although there are no registered side effects from taking hoodia, the native San Bushmen claim hoodia is also an aphrodisiac. The most heralded use of hoodia by the African bushman is an appetite suppressant, but they also use it as a thirst quencher. The San consume hoodia to end abdominal cramps, apply Xhoba for hemorrhoids, and drink hoodia tea for indigestion. Hypertension and diabetes are hoodia treated by the San Bushman, as well as tuberculosis.

Now that we know it works, will they let us have it?

James Zeller writes for numerous alternative health websites and blogs. Unbiased evaluation of health and diet supplements are included in most of his articles. Natural products are always best for the body and usually chosen as a last resort. http://www.n-ergetics.com.

Coping with Diabetes

by Amanda Baker

Every day, in the United States, more than 2000 new cases of diabetes are diagnosed. Type II diabetes, the most prevalent form of diabetes worldwide, often shows few or even no symptoms!

After eating, food is broken down into what is known as glucose, a sugar carried by the blood to cells throughout the body. Using a hormone known as insulin, made in the pancreas, cells process glucose into energy.

Because cells in the muscles, liver, and fat do not use insulin properly in the body of a person with type II diabetes, they have problems converting food into energy. Eventually, the pancreas cannot make enough insulin for the body's needs. The amount of glucose in the body increases, and the cells are starved of energy.

This starvation of the cells, paired with the high blood glucose level can damage nerves and blood vessels. This leads to complications such as kidney disease, nerve problems, blindness, and heart ailments.

There are a lot of factors that can help to attribute to diabetes cases - lifestyle, environment, heredity - and those who are at risk should be screened regularly to prevent diabetes. Those that are already diagnosed with diabetes should aim to keep their glucose level under control.

But how do you know if you have type II diabetes? After all, it has few symptoms, often no symptoms in some patients. However, if you notice an increased thirst or hunger, a change in weight, or blurred vision, getting tested for type II diabetes is necessary, as only your doctor will be able to help you find the treatment steps necessary to being able to manage your life with diabetes.

Simple changes such as eating right, managing your weight, and keeping your blood sugar level under control may be enough. However, you doctor may prescribe diabetes-regulating medications to assist you in controlling your type II diabetes.

Diabetes is a serious ailment with extreme consequences if it isn't treated properly. But if you follow your doctor's advice and maintain both your lifestyle and blood sugar levels, you can help to prevent the more serious consequences from occurring.

This article is for information purposes only and is not meant to treat, diagnose or prevent any ailment or disease. See your physician for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Bodybuilding: Helpful Tips

by Michael Russell

With any sport, hobby, or special interest, there are always some little tips and tricks that can make a big (or little) difference. The same is true for the sport of bodybuilding. There are some little things that you can do that can really help you out. The following are a few things that I do that have really helped me over the years. You might find that these tips are what you need as well.

1. Have a post-workout shake as soon as possible after your workout.

This is critical to assisting your body repair and recover from your workout. It will also help you tremendously in the area of muscle gains. Bring your shake to the gym with you and drink it while the sweat is still on your body. Use whey protein (isolate is best) as it absorbs very quickly. Also use some fruit (bananas are excellent) or fruit juice. Add creatine to voluminize your cells and glutamine to assist in tissue repair.

What I have done for years is keep a small container of whey protein powder in my gym backpack and just mix up a shake with water using my water bottle. I add creatine and glutamine and eat a banana with it or an apple. Sometime I'll even have a couple of cookies. The important thing is to get some sugary carbs into you with your protein. This will replace the depleted glycogen stores from your workout.

Do this on a regular basis and you will notice an improvement. Actually, it's really a no-brainer. What could be easier?

2. Have a coffee before you train.

If you don't like coffee, take some caffeine in another form. This will give you a little boost and help you get through your workout. This is especially effective if you train early in the morning or right after a long day at work.

By the way, caffeine is a fat burner but it is also a diuretic so make sure you drink lots of water. This leads me to the next tip:

3. Drinks lots of water.

Always have water with you and keep hydrated. Pretty simple. Enough said.

4. Listen to your body.

If you are feeling tired, sore, have aching joints, or you are having trouble sleeping at night, you could be overtraining. So take a day off. Also, make sure you take two days off in a row often so give your body a chance to rest and repair. I would say to make sure you take two days off in a row every 2-3 weeks at least.

If an exercise doesn't "feel" right, don't do it. Do something else. Use exercises that feel good to you, ones that enable you to feel the muscle group you are working. Nothing is worse than having to perform a movement that you hate doing. This could lead to injury and just plain boredom.

5. Use straps for pulling exercise like chins, pulldowns and rows.

This will allow you to keep pulling with your lats and prevent you from having to terminate a set prematurely because your forearms fatigue.

6. Keep trying to get stronger and lift more weight.

This is especially significant for the basic, heavy movements that you perform on a regular basis, right? I'm talking about squats, deadlifts, chins, bench presses, incline presses, dips, rows, etc. Set goals and maintain steady progress forwards. The body has incredible adaptive capabilities and to keep getting results, you will have to keep challenging it. The next tip follows from this point.

7. Change your routines often.

I try never to do the same workout twice in a row. Keep shocking your muscles. Don't allow your body to adapt to any set routine. Use different exercises, set and rep patterns, do things in a different order. This is good for your motivation as well. Variety is the spice of life. So change things up.

8. Have fun.

Enjoy your workouts. Relish the pumped up feeling of your muscles. Get addicted to the good vibrations you experience after a good workout. The sense of accomplishment and the positive feedback you get from your friends and loved ones when they see the changes in your physique and your mindset.

9. Get a training partner.

A good partner will motivate you, provide support and so on and so on. It's also a two-way street so your partner will benefit from your help as well. It's a win/win situation and it could be the best thing for your training.

There are 9 tips. As I was writing this, I could think of a few more, but I don't want to be guilty of information overload. I hope that you take some of this advice to heart, give it a try and see if it works for you. Sometimes, it's the little things that make all the difference.

Obesity - a Major Problem

by Michael Russell

Obesity is a major problem with it affecting children as well as adults. Obesity is when there is too much stored in the body's fatty tissues. When this excess increases, there is a corresponding increase to other medical risk as well. Some of these medical risks have the possibility to be life threatening.

The severity of obesity is measured through body mass index (BMI). The BMI is calculated by dividing the person's weight by the square of their height. (This measurement is done in metric.) The value is separated into ranges which would represent their weight classification from underweight to severely obese.

The cause of overweight conditions is when the energy intake from foods in greater than what the body needs. The excess is turned into fat cells and stored in the body. The amount of excess energy intake is very small but over time can add up to cause the overweight condition. The factors can range from the person's diet to eating disorders to mental stress among others as well. There are some statistical factors showing a higher incidence of obesity with women that have married into lower economic status than women that married into higher economic status.

The best results in reducing excess weight has been in controlling diet and a moderate exercise program. Small drops in weight have created lower health risks for the person. Most dieters that achieve greater weight loss tend to regain the weight they lost within the next several years. Other methods of weight loss include drug therapy and surgery. Both of these come with risk of complications and mortality risks as well.

In many cultures, obesity represents attractiveness or wealth. This is represented in some of their art work. Someone that I talked with once commented that they were doing work overseas for their embassy. They threw a party and invited several guests. One of their guests commented to them that everyone thought they were very wealthy because they put more than one slice of meat on their sandwiches. Other people in foreign lands receive comments of their apparent wealth because they are over weight. When asked about the comment, the reply is that people of that country could not have excessive weight unless they were wealthy because they could not buy sufficient food to be overweight.

In the last 20 years, the obesity problems in the United States has become a very serious problem. Obesity among adults has doubled and among children has tripled. Children under 19 years of age have an incidence of obesity of just under 20%. In adults, the rate is just over 32%. The recent increases in the obesity rates has public health concerns. A quick look at the environmental issues related to this would reveal some interesting problems with activity levels in addition to marketing of foods that lead to obesity. There are so many other factors that can effect this increase in rate. The change of job types to more desk jobs and less physically demanding jobs adds to these factors. There has been a decrease in walking since you can drive everywhere. The fast food industry has tremendously increased during this time as well.

The bottom line is going to be people taking personal responsibility for controlling their weight problems, exercise programs and general health concerns.

If Diets and Weight Loss Programs Leave You Cold - Start Your Own!

by Donovan Baldwin

Anything that I write on the subject of weight loss has GOT to include facts. Not supposition. Not opinion. Not argument. Not pie-in-the sky. None of that. I said "facts", and I am talking about proven facts on the subject of diets and weight loss.

Fact #1: Diets are not a permanent weight loss solution.

Fact #2: Even a "good" diet is usually mis-handled. (Okay, one opinion.)

Fact #3: You won't get there without exercise.

Fact #4: In place of a "diet" you need to substitute good nutrition.

Fact #5: Almost everything else is a helper or a hindrance.

Fact #6: You need your own weight loss program, not somebody else's.

A DIET IS NOT A PERMANENT WEIGHT LOSS SOLUTION

It is well documented that dieting, that is removing certain things from you normal list of foods you eat or eating only certain foods, does not work as a permanent weight loss solution. The explanation of this could be the subject of a book itself, but to make it short, you get bored, it's hard to stay on the diet, dieting produces changes in your body that encourage weight gain, you lose energy, it just isn't fun and so on. Pick any diet you want. Are you prepared to spend the rest of your life eating that way? Probably not. The only real solution to a lifetime problem is a change in lifestyle and behavior.

DIETS ARE COMMONLY MISUNDERSTOOD AND MISHANDLED

Here's a classic example: The Atkins diet! Ask almost anybody you know what the Atkins diet is, and they will say it's a diet that lets you eat lots of things like steak, bacon...you know, the fun stuff, without worrying about those nasty old veggies and carbohydrates. That's why it's called "low carbohydrate", right? Shows how far most people read. A few pages into the Atkins diet plan, you learn that eating like that is only supposed to be done for about the first two weeks, to shift your body into the proper mode for the next three phases. In each of those phases, Dr. Atkins actually instructed people to begin adding certain foods, including carbohydrates, back in because it is not healthy to remain on a straight diet of chicken-fried steak or whatever for the rest of your life.

Just to drive the point home, I have a friend who went on the Atkins diet over two years ago. After a couple of years, he was still eating the from the list of foods that were recommended for the first two weeks! He lost weight at first, he's gaining it back now, and then some, and has no idea why the Atkins diet doesn't work any more.

It's interesting to note that the Atkins diet, and almost any other weight loss program, diet drink, diet pill, fitness coach, you name it, includes exercise as being important to their product being effective.

YOU HAVE GOT TO EXERCISE FOR WEIGHT LOSS

In fact, many people could lose most of the weight they need to lose just by getting into the right exercise program and staying with it! That's half the problem. Our bodies are designed by Mother Nature to DO THINGS! Clicking the remote doesn't count. Again, this topic is broader than the scope of this article, but the facts are that if you want to improve your overall health, defeat or at least delay dozens of mental and physical conditions, get more enjoyment out of life, live longer, live better, AND lose weight, you need to exercise.

The basic rule of weight loss and weight gain is that if you eat more calories than you burn you gain weight. If you burn more calories than you burn, you lose weight. That simple.

For most people it really seems simple. If they eat less, they will lose weight!

IN PLACE OF A DIET YOU NEED TO SUBSTITUTE GOOD NUTRITION

As pointed out above, simply cutting foods out of your diet is not the answer. However, the solution is simple - just eat sensibly. Nobody ever said you can't eat chocolate cake, just that you shouldn't eat two or three pieces a day, and the piece you DO eat should be a normal size. We all have at least a vague idea of what foods we SHOULD be eating, and we have a good idea of what we shouldn't be eating, or at least eating a lot of. This is an active process. Most people drive up to the window and say, "Give me your 99 cent greaseburger and a cup of water with sugar." When asked if they want to "supersize" it, they agree. Even the good restaurants serve a lot more food than it is healthy to eat, but most people go ahead and eat it anyway because they have no idea of how much they should be eating, because it tastes so good, or because they were taught to clean their plates.

DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE FRILLS

You see a lot of diet and weight loss products that claim that they have found THE SOLUTION to your weight loss problem. Hardly anybody gets overfat (Arnold Schwarzenegger is "overweight") because of one single thing. Mostly, it will occur over a period of time because of a combination of factors. While nutrition and exercise are two of the absolute MOST important factors, simply changing one without the other doesn't work as well as putting both into action. Little things like an electric exercise belt, a pill made out of grapefruit, or a secret drink from Tahiti might help your weight loss program, but if you aren't already doing the two most important things, don't expect to see much in the way of results. That's why so many of these diet and weight loss products have a remark on the label that says something like "...when used in conjunction with a proper diet and regular exercise."

There is good scientific evidence that things like cortisol and caffeine can influence weight gain and weight loss, for example, but if you were to try to control your weight over a lifetime by controlling these factors, you probably would not notice any real results. If, however, you were to begin eating sensibly and getting more exercise, taking cortisol blockers or cutting caffeine out of your diet MIGHT contribute a few extra pounds of weight loss, but it is weight you will probably lose eventually if you stay on your weight loss program.

YOUR WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM, THAT'S THE GOAL

You are not your brother, your sister, or your mother no matter how closely you are tied to them genetically. What works for one of them might not be what you need. While there is scientific fact to back up the exercise equations outlined above each person is going to react in their own unique way. You need to exercise, but maybe not as much as your friend. You need to eat less chocolate ice cream, but maybe you can't eat as much as your friend does. You need to make any weight loss program work for you by designing it around you. Do the exercises you like to do, just make sure you are doing enough. What's enough? Well, you will have to experiment and see. Eat the foods you like, just eat them in sensible quantities and eat primarily foods that have a lot of real nutrition in them. What foods? Again, you will have to find your way, probably by trial and error, although there are many excellent books to give you guidance.

Speaking of goals, your goal is to be healthy and happy. Wanting to weigh a given weight because somebody else weighs that amount is senseless. You shouldn't even be trying to weigh what you weighed in high school, because, physically speaking, that was a different person. He or she was someone with a different metabolism, lifestyle, and tastes. Concentrate on getting your exercise and eating properly and let your body figure out how much it needs to weigh.

Trying to tailor a weight loss program on someone else's results is just asking for trouble as far as weight loss is concerned. They may be able to run faster than you. They may have a higher metabolic rate than you. They may have a different bone structure. They may have fewer obstacles than you. Let's face it, somebody like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie can have the best equipment, the finest personal trainer, and can make the opportunity to sculpt a beautiful body. Plus they have the incentive of knowing that their multimillion dollar salaries depend on their maintaining the basic equipment their genetic makeup endowed them with. You and I have an old set of barbells, a cracked sidewalk, sneakers that are falling apart, live paycheck to paycheck, and the kids are going to be home in two hours. You and I are not going to look like Brad, Angelina, or Arnold. Just do the best you can with what you've got, and you will not regret the outcome, trust me.

Psychoneuroimmunology, Laughter as Medicine

by Kenneth Snodin

Research scientists have spent considerable time investigating the effects of laughter. They have found that laughter can help patients recover from illnesses because it tends to lower blood pressure, reduce stress hormone levels, and recharges the body’s immune system. Laughter is also known to release a body’s natural painkilling substances to provide an overall feeling of well-being. This is a result of stimulating blood flow and aiding the heart.

It has been said that laughter has about the same benefits as aerobic exercise, but it comes without the pain sometimes experienced with physical exercise. Laughter also helps to control insulin levels and blood sugars, and while scientists don’t recommend that patients quit their diets or exercise regimens, they do say that laughing definitely helps. Doctors have discovered that laughter also has an effect on viruses, bacteria, cancer and heart disease. They determined that their patients boosted their immune systems just by watching funny videos and movies.

Laughter is one of the first things we learn as babies. Scientists note that babies who smile the quickest were smiled at more in general. If parents are happy and smiling, it is a given that the baby is likely to smile quickly as well. Much research on children has been performed, and scientists discovered that laughter helped with children’s ability to endure pain and was also effective in the healing process. This is a valuable discovery for young cancer patients. Laughing relaxed patients who had to have painful procedures or who suffered from the anxiety of pain expectation.

Researchers have found that there are many positive effects from laughter, but no known negative effects. Laughter really is the best medicine. Just thinking about something funny makes the hormones flow, and the body has a positive and healthy response.

Experiencing stress without laughter reduces the ability of the body to fight disease because it suppresses the immune system. A stressed body can’t fight infections and other disorders. Your body responds to emotions and feelings, so it’s good to laugh and release all the positive effects related to laughter. Basically, the immune system is closely linked to the positives resulting from laughter. Laughing helps to fight disease.

Stress levels can be reduced through daily exercise and having good eating habits, and when laughter is added, things get even better. People who laugh a lot have reduced stress levels, and reducing stress is a major step in fighting disease.

Work/Life Balance: Forming Healthy Habits

by Wendy Betterini

A habit is an action or series of actions that we perform in a subconscious manner. We don't have to consciously think about doing these things, they seem to happen on their own. Habits can be good or bad, depending on how they enhance our quality of life, or detract from it.

Have you ever driven home or to work and then had no recollection of the ride? Or have you taken the wrong exit off a freeway because it's the one you usually take, when in fact you had intended to keep on to another exit? Our minds become conditioned to doing things in a certain way, simply because we have done them over and over again in that exact way. This can be a good thing, as it makes much of our daily routine somewhat effortless. Imagine having to focus intently on every little thing you did, like washing dishes or taking out the garbage. Sounds exhausting, doesn't it?

However, negative actions can also become habits, and that makes them extremely difficult to change. How many times have you tried to adopt an exercise program, quit smoking, lose weight, or give up junk food? It takes between 21-30 days to form a new habit. This means you must perform your new actions repeatedly, day after day, for up to 30 days before your subconscious mind will begin to do them automatically. Until then it takes consistent effort and focus.

When trying to break a bad habit, it is usually helpful to substitute a good habit. Otherwise you'll end up feeling restless and gravitate back to the bad habit again to fill the void. For example, when quitting smoking, take up gum chewing, exercise, deep breathing, knitting, etc. When the urge for a cigarette hits, you have other activities you can use to busy yourself. At first, the new habit may not seem like an adequate substitute (especially if nicotene withdrawal is part of the equation!), but with consistent reinforcement, your mind will begin to let go of the old habit of smoking and adopt the newer habits you have substituted.

When trying to adopt a new habit, such as exercise, you may need to place visible reminders at your desk, on the refrigerator door, or the bathroom mirror. Remember that your mind is accustomed to not thinking about exercise. It will take some focused attention to change that.

It is important to have patience with yourself as you work on changing your habits. Remember that they are habits because they are largely subconscious. As you focus your conscious mind repeatedly on your new actions, they will also become subconscious, just like the negative actions did. Print out this handy Habit Forming Chart and hang it up where you will see it everyday. It can serve as a great reminder for your goals, as well as show your progress from day to day.

Don't beat yourself up if you have "failures" here and there as you work on forming new habits. No one is perfect, and you will probably have days where you don't meet your goals. The most difficult aspect of forming new habits is becoming aware of the automatic actions we take each day, and making a conscious decision to change them.

Cialis - star performer solving erectile dysfunction

by Antony Virgese

Introduction

Cialis, Viagra etc…..can they save marriages made in heaven?

Have you watched Sex and the City on HBO? Yes, this is the same one that swept away Emmys! Do you happen to remember the episodes where Charlotte York (played by Kirsten Davis) and her husband Trey MacDougal (played by Kyle MacLachlan), totally in love, yet suffer from the embarrassing moments in bedroom when Charlotte finds out the impotence problem with Trey. Well, if this scene seems familiar to you then you surely know what men with erectile dysfunction must do in order to save the marriage from crumbling down. There are answers to this problem which only experts can answer once you ask them, but who does gonna bell the cat? Just to assure, if you are one of them, the initiative must lie with you. If you have been a man enough to have total control over situation then you must surely know what’s best for you in such cases. Consult a doctor who expertise in the field of erectile dysfunction, better called as urologist!

Cialis-the new age impotence drug
What if Trey would have logged on to the official sites of Cialis or of other impotence drugs? Could it not have saved the happy marriage from falling down? Look this does not mean that you can experiment like the way you do with Ecstasy! Coz’ Cialis is not a placebo or aphrodisiac. Impotence drugs are recommended carefully after checking up on the sexual health and general fitness of the patient. Let’s know Cialis a little better as we go along!

The magic component

Tadalafil is the secret behind Cialis success story. Cialis has an edge over Viagra in terms of sustenance. Tadalafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction problems in men by blocking an enzyme called PDE5 (phosphodiesterase). This helps to increase the blood flow in the penis thereby helping to achieve and sustain an erection. This drug is taken usually 30 minutes before sexual activity and the effect can last up to 36 hours. However, the dosage and usage depends on the doctor’s advice as Cialis is not meant for men with heart problems as it can lower blood pressure to a danger mark or patients taking nitrate medication etc. These conditions can only be examined by a doctor. Always give a complete medical history and drugs being used before taking the medicine. Cialis also works faster, within 15 minutes of taking the medicine.

Cialis-usual side effects

Headache, stomach upset, facial flushing, nasal congestion, disturbances in vision and back pain are the usual side effects. However, if the se symptoms linger for more than 4 hours immediately seek medical help. Look out for a few warning signs like prolonged erection, painful erection, itching or burning sensation during urination etc. People who smoke or are over 50 years of age should be extra cautious! This also goes for men with diabetes, heart problems, eye problems, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Conclusion

You can avail Cialis online. However, Cialis is not meant for all. Hence before you consider Cialis online you must think twice. It’s not about Cialis or Viagra or just any other impotence drug. It’s to do with kicking a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise and reducing anxiety. All those Marlboro men in the ads are just to lure you into a mythical world coz’ smokers increase chances of ED. Last but not the least be positive and approach your problem wisely! After all you don’t want to go the way Charlotte and Trey did.
