Alzheimers: The Facts

by David McFarlane

Someone in your family has Alzheimers disease, and you have been gathering info on Alzheimers disease to try to help you make decisions about what to do next, but everything you find is so scientific and complicated. What can you tell your kids to make them understand why their grandfather or uncle does not recognize them anymore? The info on Alzheimers disease below is aimed at children and families, so read it together.

Alzheimers: What Is It?

Alzheimers disease is a form of a mental disorder known as dementia. Dementia is a brain disorder that seriously hampers the brains ability to process rational or normal thought and inhibits the daily activities of its sufferers because of this. Alzheimers disease, therefore, affects the part of the brain that is responsible for thought, memory, and language.

Alzheimers disease is one of the leading causes of death in America. The German physician Alois Alzheimer first identified this disorder in 1907. This disorder is a serious illness that affects the memory ability of the brain, capability of learning, making rational decisions and capacity to function routinely.

Alzheimers disease robs millions of people each year of their memories, their personalities, and the ability to complete daily activities. For the longest time, it was believed that nothing could be done to prevent this awful disease; that it was simply something that people had to look forward to when they reached their golden years. However, new research indicates that there is a number of ways to prevent Alzheimers disease.

The hallmark sign of Alzheimers disease is the loss of memory. Generally, those 65 years of age or older, begin to concern themselves with this disease at the first episodes of forgetfulness. Although forgetfulness is a sign of Alzheimers disease, it is important to note that there are other signals that may herald the onset of this malady. Therefore, being knowledgeable about Alzheimers, through exhibited signs, and is paramount for our loved one’s health as well as our own.

Dealing With Alzheimers

Hearing the news that a family member has received an Alzheimers diagnosis can be an emotionally devastating moment in anyones life. However, before the Alzheimers diagnosis can be given to the patient and their family, the patient must undergo a variety of laboratory tests, such as medical assessments and laboratory measurements. There is no single test existing that will categorically give the Alzheimers diagnosis.

With this proactive stance, diagnosticians have been able to devise a set of Alzheimers disease testing tools that can detect symptoms of Alzheimers disease in its earlier stages. As of yet, there is no single diagnostic test that is able to determine if a person has Alzheimers disease, but the battery of testing that is available makes it possible for physicians to diagnose it with about 90 percent accuracy. Alzheimers disease testing can take anywhere from one day to several weeks to ensure accuracy and proper diagnosis.

An Alzheimers test is important to ensure that the person is not just going through the usual memory loss associated with age; however, sometimes an Alzheimers test is not necessary. Alzheimers disease doesn’t just affect a persons memory; it can make people see things that aren’t there, and even send them into screaming fits. If you think a loved one is starting to become senile or experience other symptoms of dementia, you may want that person to undergo Alzheimers testing. Unfortunately, there is currently no definitive test for Alzheimers disease that a person can undergo. The only way doctors diagnose Alzheimers with 100% certainty is through physical examination of the brain after the person has passed away. Rather than Alzheimers testing, what you want to look for is some type of psychological and behavioral screening coupled with extensive tests to rule out other types of dementia.

Living With Alzheimers

Living with Alzheimers can be a crippling experience for both the disease sufferer and the family that is involved. There are many moments of misunderstanding or confusion for most and the symptoms can become frustrating and difficult. The loss of memory and other associated factors can often cause immense separation in families and can create a nervous tension on relationships that is not necessary if suitable information is available and utilized by all parties involved.

Finding in-house Alzheimers help should not be an emotionally laden issue for the entire family. Tackling this need in an organized way, from evaluating to planning, is the key to making in-house Alzheimers help feasible. First, you should sit down and evaluate the needs of the family caregiver and the patient. From there, creating a job list and a set of guidelines becomes easy to make and follow.

Caring for someone with Alzheimers can be a daunting task. You will need all of the support you can get, along with the latest and most significant Alzheimers info and research. It is a confusing time, and the more you know, the more confident you will feel in your ability to give your loved one the best possible care and support. It is also important to build a support network that will help you to avoid the common problems associated with caretaker burnout.

Antiaging Supplements for a Youthful You

by Steve Goltiao

With increasing demand for people who want to reverse the effects of aging, a growing number of products, including antiaging supplements, are making their way to market. With products including creams, skin treatments, pills and therapy, it’s no wonder that consumers can get dizzy with confusion over which method is best. There are the extremely expensive creams and systems endorsed by Hollywood stars. There are small fly-by-night operations pushing the latest and greatest antiaging supplement only to disappear in a few months. And who knows if what they offer really works? If you are looking for an affordable and safe way to age gracefully, try looking for natural antiaging supplements that are rich in antioxidants. The most prominent among antiaging supplements are Vitamin C, Vitamin E, green tea, and mangosteen.

Vitamin E is widely known as an antiaging supplement and can be taken in pill or capsule form. It is also a key ingredient in many antiaging creams and lotions. As an antioxidant, Vitamin E helps combat free radicals, which work to damage your body’s cells. Vitamin E also acts as a moisturizer, tightening and restoring resilience in the skin. You can increase your body’s Vitamin E intake by eating dark leafy green vegetables, grains, seeds and nuts.

Another important antioxidant and antiaging supplement is Vitamin C. In addition to helping your body fight those nasty free radicals, it also helps to keep your skin cells rejuvenated. Vitamin C is found in high amounts in fruits and vegetables such as papayas, pineapples, cantaloupes, tomatoes, green peppers, and citrus fruits.

Recently there has been a greater awareness of the benefits of green tea as an antiaging supplement. Like vitamins C and E, green tea is extremely effective in combating free radicals. And, thanks to high levels of the antioxidant EGCG, green tea has actually been found to inhibit the growth of cancer cells as well as help other medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Other Chinese teas, which also contain EGCG, do not possess the same medical benefits. This is because green tea goes through a steaming process which prevents the oxidation of the all-important EGCG.

The mangosteen fruit is a lesser known natural supplement that is highly touted as the “Queen of Fruits”. Scientific studies have revealed that this fruit is packed with antioxidants – more than any plant or vegetable in existence. Its high antioxidant content makes it ideal as an antiaging supplement. Mangosteen can also be taken for allergies, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol levels, inflammation, and viral, bacterial, and fungal infections.

Sepsis Food Poisoning

by Ryan Fyfe

Food poisoning is a sepsis(The presence of harmful microorganisms or associated toxins in the blood and tissues), that is caused by consuming foods that are contaminated with pathogenic bacteria, toxins, viruses, prions or parasites. These contaminations are normally as a result of improper handling, storage or preparation of food. Pesticides added to food can also add in the likelyhood of consumption of the viruses. Contact that Pests, such as flies and cockroaches have with food, further increases the change of contamination.

Because symptoms often don't occur for several hours after the contaminated food is eaten, it is hard at times to 'pin the tail on the donkey' and figure out exactly where it came from. Initial Food Poisoning symptoms generally include: vomiting, diarrhea, fever, nausea, abdominal pain, headache or tiredness. Typically our body is able to recover by itself from the poisoning, after a short period of time. In rare cases, especially with babies and pregnant women, food poisoning can result in permanent health problems, and in even more extreme cases, death.

The time that passes between the food consuption and the actual presence of the virus, is known as the incubation period. During this period microbes are passed through the stomach and into the intestine where they attach the cells that line the intestinal wall. They then being to multiply.

Practicing good hygiene during the three stages of food preparation(before, after, during), can greatly reduce the chance of food poisoning. Be smart about your health and take the necessary precautions when working with food.

Stay Young Longer

by Jaspreet Singh Batra

It’s obvious, some day in your life, you looked at a pretty face, trying to guess in which college she studies and then suddenly from nowhere a kid aged around 8 years comes and hugs that beautiful lady and says ‘mumma’ and you are shocked. Yes, shocked is the word. It’s more than stunning how some people look a lot younger than their age and some look like that were born old.

How you can be on the earlier side is what you can find here:

Go on read carefully and most important, follow religiously.

1) Cleanse & Moisturise:

As far as possible, keep your skin especially face as clean as possible and after every wash, make sure you moisturize it. The more your skin retains moisture the younger look you maintain. Take extra care of sensitive wrinkle areas, near mouth and eyes.

2) Sleep Well:

Well everyone has a different version of how many hours of sleep. Although most of the researchers recommend 8 hours of sleep; but my view is you should get enough sleep, so that when you wake up, you should feel reenergized. What for sleep is? It’s basically time for body to rejuvenate itself. So better your sleep, more good for you and your skin.

3) Eat Healthy:

Drink loads of water at least 8 glasses a day. And water means water, not just any liquid. Water is known to cleanse our system of toxins. Also increase fresh juicy fruits in your diet. Fresh vegetables and good protein diet will also go a long way in giving you a younger look.

4) Don’t overeat:

When we overeat for long, our skin stretches and body expands, so when we try to loose weight after that, some stretch marks may remain. So, it’s better to be careful from beginning. Don’t overeat and don’t under eat. Try to keep your weight as close as possible to your ideal weight.

5) Exercise:

Ideally a 30 minutes exercise will keep you fit and looking young. Exercise improves your blood circulation and keeps your muscles working. However, don’t overdo.

6) Avoid Smoking:

There’s an old saying. Those who smoke never get old because they die in their youth. I am sure you won’t like to do that to you. Moreover, you might have noticed those who smoke, look tired and pale. With smoking the skin ages faster and looks older. So, it’s best to say no the first time.

7) Avoid Stress:

Stress will take its toll. Nothing gets better by worrying, it only gets worst. There’s no problem in this world that doesn’t have a solution and definitely by worrying it doesn’t get resolved. Patience pays. Every night however long is followed by a day. So stay calm. Stress disrupts normal sleep which will adversely affect your health and your looks. The problem will get a solution today or tomorrow but your skin vitality once lost will not be easy to get back.

So, to stay young longer, eat healthy, stay calm and SMILE a lot.

Till we meet again, stay healthy, stay young.

Managing Fibromyalgia Symptoms with Vitamins

by Steven Godlewski

Fibromyalgia, or Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS), is generally characterized by pain in the muscles and bones, multiple tender points located on different parts of the body, trouble sleeping (or waking up still feeling tired). FMS, while different for everyone who has it, tends to come and go throughout life. It is not a deforming, degenerative, life-threatening condition, but for those afflicted with it, it is very real.

For anyone who suffers from Fibromyalgia the symptoms can be almost unbearable at times. Equally unbearable to many can be the side effects of the medications used to treat the condition. Although prescription medications may be necessary for a great number of Fibromyalgia sufferers, there are vitamins that can be taken in conjunction with prescription medication to provide relief from some, although probably not all, of the symptoms of Fibromyalgia.

First, before discussing any vitamin supplements that can be beneficial to those suffering from Fibromyalgia, I must stress that you should discuss any diet changes and supplements with your physician before making any changes to your diet. Although not common, certain vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements can react adversely with medications. Be sure to consult your physician before adding anything new to your diet.

I'm going to detail some of the most common and most effective vitamins that can be used to help relieve and manage symptoms of Fibromyalgia. Below is a list of those vitamins:

* Phosphatidyl choline and phosphatidyl serine (300 mg per day) may help depression and improve memory.

* B vitamins help reduce the effects of stress: B-complex (50 to 100 mg per day), B6 (100 mg per day) and niacinamide (100 mg per day) and assist in adrenal function to assist with muscle weakness, pain and sleep disorders and immune function.

* Chromium picolinate (200 mcg with meals) may reduce reactive hypoglycemia which may make your symptoms worse.

* Vitamin C (250 to 500 mg twice per day) reduces swelling and helps your immune system function better.

* Magnesium (200 mg two to three times per day) with malic acid (1,200 mg one to two times per day) relieves pain and fatigue.

* Melatonin (0.5 to 3 mg one time before bed) may help sleep.

* 5-Hydroxytryptophan (100 mg three times per day) may help with depression and insomnia.

* Coenzyme Q10 (50 to 100 mg one to two times per day) improves oxygen delivery to tissues and has antioxidant activity.

* Zinc (30 mg per day) is essential for proper immune function.

Depending on what symptoms you have you can use the list above as a guideline for vitamins to discuss adding to your diet with your physician. Not all people with Fibromyalgia have the same symptoms, for instance you may not have difficulty sleeping or may not have trouble with your immune system. Consider carefully the symptoms you have and then make a list of vitamins you would like to add to your diet.

The vitamins listed above should be used in conjunction with medication and exercise recommended by your physician. Over time you may find that certain medications can be reduced and, possibly stopped altogether. However this is a decision that should be made under medical supervision. The best treatment for Fibromyalgia is an approach that treats your whole body, inside and out with proper diet, exercise and when needed medication.

What You Should Know About Blood Pressure Monitors

by Valentine Burghill

If you are suffering from high blood pressure, or hypertension, it's probably a good idea for you to have a personal blood pressure monitor at home.

Alternatively, you can always go to Walgreens or Sam's Club, or any other pharmacies where sit-down automatic blood pressure machines are available so that you can customers who woiuld like to check their own blood pressure.

These are usually fairly accurate, but your blood pressure may be a little more raised than it would be if you were checking it at home. It's really only what you would expect -- if you'e out shopping, dealing with the issues of driving, parking, finding the items you want, checking out, etc, your blood pressure is probably going to be a little higher, and it is simply normal for it to fluctuate a little in the course of the day.

But stress has a known effect on blood pressure, which is why you might want to consider having a personal blood pressure monitor at home, so that you can check your blood pressure at times when you are not influenced by the rat race going on in the world outside your home.

There are several different types of blood pressure monitors you might choose for home use, and these can be obtained in most pharmacies, and also on a number of websites.

Prices can fluctuate, significantly, starting as low as $25 and reaching $300 and more, depending on the features of the unit, and whether it is electric, battery operated, or manual.

Blood pressure monitors are available in several forms, which can monitor by using the arm, finger or wrist. Some of them inflate automatically and others must be manually inflated with the attached bulb. Larger sized cuffs are also available if needed, and most if not all blood pressure monitors will tell the individual their pulse as well as a blood pressure reading.

Additionally, some blood pressure monitors will also warn the user of an irregular heartbeat, give a warning if a high or low reading is recorded, and will also give an average of three readings. Most blood pressure monitors also come with a carrying case, batteries, and forms to record your readings. More expensive models have more features, more than one size cuff, extra bulbs, and sometimes many other extras.

Additional bells and whistles are really not necessary, and a basic unit such as that curently available from Walgreens for $35 will serve your purpose just fine. Most blood pressure monitors offer a warranty card you can send in, along with an address you can send it to if you have any problems. But if you'e buying an inexpensive unit, it may be a better approach to just buy another unit, avoiding the trouble, time and expense involved in returning a faulty unit.

However you eventually proceed, a home blood pressure monitor could be a real life saver. Bearing in mind that hypertension is known as the silent killer, an early warning of trouble ahead might literally save your life.

How Does My DNA Work?

by Babu G. Ranganathan

The subject of DNA is very much in the headlines and news but very few have bothered to learn or understand just how this amazing molecule works and how it makes us what we are from head to toe. Haven't you ever asked yourself how you got your nose, eyes, ears, fingers, toes, and everything else? How did your DNA bring all this about? Before we answer that question we need to know just a few simple things about DNA.

DNA is the abbreviated name for the genetic code and it is exactly that - a code. It is a molecular string of chemical information.

DNA is located in the nucleus of our cells and is made up of smaller molecules called nucleic acids. These smaller molecules in DNA are arranged in a sequence, just like the letters in a sentence. The sequence of these nucleic acids tell the cells in our body how to build our nose, eyes, hands, feet, and everything else.

The material our body uses to build new cells comes from the food we eat. Food is not just for energy. Food is also the "lumber" and "bricks" the body uses to build new cells. When a cell multiplies it makes more cells of the same size. The only way to do this is by getting new material and that new material comes from food.

Think about it! When we were in our mother's womb we started off as a single cell not even weighing an ounce at conception. Eventually we developed arms, hands, legs, feet and organs such as brain, heart, lungs, liver, stomach, until we had a complete body. It's true that the single cell we once were multiplied into many more cells, but where did the material come from for that one cell to multiply into billions of more cells of equal size and eventually making a body weighing several pounds from something that didn't even weigh an ounce in the beginning. The material came from our mother's food.

When food is digested and broken down to its basic amino acids the various amino acids are then rearranged in a certain sequence to form cells that make up the various tissues and organs. What sequence these amino acids come together in is determined by the sequence of the molecules in DNA.

Remember, even after all our organs are formed the cells that make up our organs are continually dying and need to be replaced. Again, the material to make more cells to replace the ones that are dying comes from food.

Thus, when you feed your dog a T-Bone steak your dog's DNA will make sure that steak is digested and rearranged to form the various parts of your dog, but when you eat the same steak your DNA will make sure that the steak is digested and rearranged to form human parts.

The sequence in DNA differs from individual to individual and from species to species. For an analogy think of a library where all the books are in one language. In the library there are different books on different topics and subjects. All the books share the letters from the same alphabet, but the sequence in which these letters are arranged are different from book to book. The sequence of the letters makes the difference between a book on chemistry and a romance novel!

When scientists study genes they are studying segments of the DNA molecule. The goal of the human genome project was to locate where the various genes are on the DNA. Only in this way can we begin to understand how to use genetic engineering to correct various genetically caused disorders and maladies. Faulty genes arise from mutations. Mutations are accidental changes in the sequence of the genetic code caused by radiation and other environmental forces. Most biological variations, however, are not from mutations but from new combinations of already existing genes.

Because they are accidents in the genetic code, almost all mutations are harmful. Even if a good mutation does occur for every good one there would be hundreds of harmful ones with the net effect over time being harmful, if not lethal, to the species as a whole.

Evolutionists hope that with enough time and with enough mutations new genes for entirely new traits will be produced leading to the evolution of new biological kinds. There is no evidence that this can happen from accidental changes in the sequence of the genetic code, anymore than it's possible to change a romance novel into a book on chemistry by accidental changes in the sequence of the letters.

At the very best mutations can only produce new varieties of already existing genes or traits, but not new genes or new traits. For example, mutations in the gene for human hair may change that gene so that another type of human hair develops but the mutations won't change the gene so that feathers or wings develop!

No one has shown that DNA can come into existence by chance! It takes DNA to get DNA! Yes, the individual molecules that make up DNA have been shown to be able to come into existence by chance. But, it has never been shown that those individual molecules can come together into a sequence by chance to form the genetic code.

Science cannot prove the existence of God but the scientific evidence shows that DNA, life, and the universe are not here by chance. For more information on this please read my other articles and, especially, my essay "The Natural Limits of Evolution" at my website www.religionscience.com.

Back Pain Treatment: Variety Of Options Available

by Saurabh Jain

Back pain is occurred due to various causes and in 90% of the back pain cases, the pain disappears easily by various back pain treatment. However, proper medical advice and treatment is essential in cases where the pain persists for a long time.

Back pain treatment is effective if the exact cause is identified. The severity of back pain may vary from a dull ache to searing feeling. It may be due a strain in the muscles or an injury or problems like Osteoarthritis, arthritis, bone fracture or tumor or some infection. Although back pain may emerge suddenly, it may be caused by a problem, which has plagued us for a long time. It is essential that we identify the true cause of the back pain, if we want to eliminate or treat it fully.

A number of back pain treatment options are available for people suffering from back pain. However, the treatment may vary from person to person depending on the cause or the reason for the back pain. The exact nature of the pain and its severity can be judged by a specialist who will than suggest the most appropriate treatment.

Exercising is the best back pain treatment. It is a general notion that bed rest is the best cure for back pain. But evidence has shown that rest does not aid in the recovery of a person suffering from Back pain. It is much better if one carries on with normal activities while taking some measures for relieving the pain. The most recommended exercises for curing back pain are short walks, stretching exercises and swimming. However, it is advisable that one starts slowly and than gradually builds up the speed at which the various exercises are undertaken.

Application of a cold pack or a bag of ice to the back is also often recommended by the doctors. This form of back pain treatment is generally used within the first 48 hours after the start of the back pain. A cold pack is generally applied for 5-10 minutes. Ice reduces the inflammation and swelling, numbs soft tissues, and slows nerve impulses in the injured area.

A large number of drugs are also used as back pain treatment that reduce the pain and are easily available in the market. However, many of them can have serious side effects and so should be taken only after consulting a physician. Several non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, Naproxen®, Ketoprofen® are capable of reducing pain. These anti-inflammatory medications help in reducing the swelling and inflammation while healing the injured portion. Acute or chronic back pain may be treated by an anticonvulsant or an oral steroid.

Steroid injections are also effective in reducing the inflammation and the treatment of back pain caused by spinal stenosis, disc herniation, and degenerative disc disease. A steroid is injected directly into the membrane that surrounds the nerve roots (dura).

Other forms of back pain treatment include the massage therapy, the electrotherapy and the adjustment of the spine Chiropractors and osteopaths. Acupuncture may also prove to be effective in some cases. Finally surgery may be recommended in cases where the pain is not curable by any of the other forms of treatment.

Splenda is Not Safe!

by Dr. Robert Bard

You must read labels

Splenda is found in processed foods and drinks – mostly, but our latest concern is that 10 % of Splenda is being sold to drug companies and the FDA doesn’t require them to report this very toxic product on their labels.

The following symptoms have been noticed within a 24-hour period following consumption of Splenda products:

• Skin -- Redness, itching, swelling, blistering, weeping, crusting, rash, eruptions, or hives (itchy bumps or welts). These are the most common allergic symptoms that people have.

• Lungs -- Wheezing, tightness, cough, or shortness of breath.

• Head -- Swelling of the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, or throat; headaches and migraines (severe headaches).

• Nose -- Stuffy nose, runny nose (clear, thin discharge), sneezing.

• Eyes -- Red (bloodshot), itchy, swollen, or watery.

• Stomach -- Bloating, gas, pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or bloody diarrhea.

• Heart -- Palpitations or fluttering.

• Joints -- Joint pains or aches.

• Neurological -- Anxiety, dizziness, spaced-out sensation, depression.

This is not a complete list. A person just reported that the mystery of her mother's conjunctival hemorrhage (blood on the white part of eye); completely cleared up once her mom stopped consuming Splenda.

Please pass this on to family and friends. Also remember that Equal (Aspartame) is just as toxic if not worse. It is the leading cause of migraine head aches plus hundreds of other symptoms as it is an excitotoxin. Russell Blaylock MD has a very good case presentation that Aspartame, MSG, and Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (or Soy Protein) are the root causes of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and ALS.

Aspartame has been around for 25 years with a longer track record than Splenda. The above list will grow as time increases with our experiences with Splenda.

Please read labels!

Robert D Bard, OD, FAAO

I attended West Virginia University and graduated from Pennsylvania College of Optometry with a Bachelor of Science degree and a Doctor of Optometry degree.

As a health professional I was always interested in disease prevention but found the medical model – drug companies and doctors – unacceptable. The medical model towards disease is that they want us – the people – to contract disease and they will prevent us from dieing as long as we continue to take their drugs for the rest of our lives. This is their idea of preventive medicine. The population expects prevention to prevent disease before we get sick.

I became overweight and like most people blamed it on me and my eating habits, but I knew that diets and potions on TV DO NOT WORK and therefore put off doing anything until I stumbled across a solution.

In 1999 I began itching and it got worse almost by the day. I started taking antihistamines to reduce the itching and over a 10 month time period visited 4 dermatologists. The first 3 doctors miss diagnosed my problem. The forth discovered the cause but I had to use a pesticide all over my body to correct the condition – I know this seems strange but I had an infestation of Norwegian mites under my skin (I didn’t even know that mites had a pedigree much less a country of origin).

When I used the pesticide to kill the mites I swelled up like the Pillsbury Dough Boy. With this ordeal I gained even more weight and ended up looking like Porky the Pig. I also lost my sense of taste because of all the antihistamines.

In 2002 I did some consulting work for a supplement company and they gave me a gift book by Sherry Rogers, MD. At the same time I had a patient in my office that sensitive to all chemicals including the chemicals from a carpet that was 6 months old and from my cologne. He had to wear a mask filled with carbon just to get through a basic eye examination. After quizzing him about his condition I discovered that over 6 million people in the US can’t function normally because of toxic chemicals – that means holding down jobs and leading a normal life.

Because of this patient I began to investigate toxic chemicals and how they affect people, particularly my health, my taste, and weight problems. With this information I have lost 70 pounds, gone from a jean size of 50 to 40. I feel better, look better, and my big belly that used to catch food is almost gone. (I no longer catch food on my stomach)

I have discovered that the public is one big toxic chemical experiment by industrial food manufactures, chemical companies that control farm chemicals with Genetically Engineered crops, drug companies and companies that want to dump their waste products without protecting the public.

There are some really good people that write books and educate people about health issues, economic issues, environmental issues, food problems but all these people specialize in certain areas. My job as I see it is to be a reporter and filter the important information to my subscribers.

I have also been a farmer for years and one of my discoveries is that our diseased health economy starts with toxic chemicals and crop land.

Unhealthy Soil = Unhealthy Plants and Animals = Unhealthy People

I also think it is terrible that when people retire at the age of 65 that 97% are in poverty in this nation. I believe that I can help people make extra money in retirement through my experience on eBay and other sources of information. I have a free newsletter that discusses health issues and money issues to help people.

Obesity is an Increasing Health Risk

by Clarence Carter

High blood pressure, joint pains, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, heart ailments, palsy, liver ailments, menstrual abnormalities, breast cancer, female infertility, decline in libido, endometrial cancer, mental stress, blood circulation diseases like arteriosclerosis, cholelithiasis etc. These are some of the diseases which might come up with obesity. This list seems endless. But before knowing how to end obesity one must know “what is obesity?”

Whom would you consider a person to be obese? A person who has BMI (Body Mass Index) of over 30 is considered to be an obese individual. But how does one become obese? In theory causes of obesity are gene, intake of fatty foods, lacking of physical activity, food habits, laziness and endocrine problems.

What are the available remedies for getting out of obesity?

Liposuction: It is a surgical process where the fat is removed by sucking out the fat from the body by inserting a needle.

Surgery: Commonly this procedure involves surgery of stomach and intestine to lower the intake of food.

Diet Pills: Majority of the diet pills are for short-term use only. These diet pills are effective only if they are used in combination with exercises and a controlled diet.

Fat burning pills: These are short-term quick fat burning pills. But the main problem with this medication is that the results are short lived. Once the medication is stopped the fats again show up.

Exercises: It is an age old technique of obesity reduction. It is a natural process so side effects are not there.

Controlled diet program: Like exercises this too is a natural process. Here a limited amount of food is taken which controls the formation of fat in the body.

Acupressure and acupuncture: Age old technique but nothing concrete has been proved yet.

Whatever be the method of getting over obesity there is no better method than natural methods like exercises and controlled diet program. And if a diet pill like Phentermine, Adipex, Acomplia is introduced the effects would be visible within a short time period.

Apart from physical aspects obesity may also let you feel dejected, out of the world and may make an individual abstain from social gatherings. If you are obese it is time to act. Whatever remedy you choose you should always consult your doctor for his view on that remedy.

Obesity is a health risk. It may lead to a multiple of diseases in future. It is better to get out of obesity to remain away from the future diseases. Change in food habits and doing physical exercises are the cost effective and natural way of treating it.

Improve Your Eyesight With Trataka

by Sharon Hopkins

Eyes are the windows of the soul and you can see what a person is up to by looking into his eyes. Hence, it is important to have clean eyesight. In yoga, trataka is a technique devised by the ancient sages to improve eyesight. It is a shuddhikriya or a purification process to cleanse the eyesight and help in the silencing of the mind in concentration.

Sit with your back straight. Keep your eyes fixed on an object without winking till tears start streaming down your face. The small object can be the flame of an oil lamp, or an image or a picture or the letter ‘AUM”. This object should be placed in the line of sight at a distance of about four to six feet. You can also do this kriya without any object in front of you. Having an object is not necessary. Just stare in front of you at the wall without moving the eyeballs or eyelids. Ensure that you stare at a certain point on the wall.

Before starting this exercise, you can start off by moving the eyes without moving the head, where you roll your eyeballs up and down, sideways and from corner to corner diagonally. Initially, you can make this movement with open eyes and then repeat them with closed eyes. This will give the requisite exercise to the eye muscles. This is then followed by trataka. Trataka makes the eyes clear, improves eyes and silences the mind. Over a period of time, you will experience the silence of the mind. If you want to meditate, start with trataka to silence the mind and then go to the meditation. This way, you will reap the benefits of meditation. Since you are exercising the eye muscles, they become stronger. You can perform this kriya daily without any harmful effects.

Sharon Hopkins is the webmaster of Yogawiz (www.yogawiz.com) that provides loads of information on Basics of Yoga,Office Yoga, Asanas and Poses.Trataka is an excellent eye exercise. It can also lead to silencing the turbulent mind.

Discover the Health Benefits of Turmeric

by Dan Ho

Discover the Health Benefits of Turmeric

The health benefits of turmeric...

What if I told you there was a nutrient that had a myriad of health benefits, could help with a range of some of the most debilitating health conditions in the Western world, was cheap, and, lastly, was very very tasty.

Sounds too good to be true, I know, but that's exactly what turmeric offers.

The Health Benefits of Turmeric

Turmeric is a yellow spice that is used a great deal in Indian cuisine. Its history of use in India and China spans hundreds of years and these cultures have been received its many health benefits without even realizing just powerful it was.

In recent decades researchers discovered just how wonderful this culinary spice really is.

They learned that turmeric contains an active ingredient called curcumin that harbors both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Antioxidants, as we all now, play an important role in helping prevent free radicals from damaging our body's cells.

In addition, free radical damage often results in inflammation.

Our bodies are designed to fight this inflammation via our immune system...but in the process may become overburdened and, therefore, weakened from battling the constant free radical induced inflammation.

This is one of the best health benefits of turmeric because as both an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory it may aid our immune system indirectly.

Also, if you have arthritis, you may be reading more about the turmeric arthritis connection.

Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, studies are now suggesting that turmeric may help with arthritis because arthritis is characterized by painful inflammation of the joints.

Other than turmeric arthritis, curcumin, the active ingredient, is believed to help with Alzheimer's because of its anti-inflammatory properties.

In fact, Alzheimer's is a lot more rare in India than it is in the United States and turmeric is used a lot in their curry cooking.

Research has shown that in some towns and villages in India where turmeric use is especially high, there are almost no cases of Alzheimer's.

Keep in mind that this is merely correlation at this point. Nobody knows yet whether turmeric helps prevent Alzheimer's...but the preliminary evidence so far is promising.

Another condition that turmeric is being used for is psoriasis, which is a scaly, painful, and unsightly skin condition. Again, psoriasis is a condition characterized by inflammation....and turmeric's anti-inflammatory properties may be key in helping counter it.

Other studies have shown that turmeric may help lower cholesterol and have heart healthy benefits. It may reduce platelets from clumping together, which may help guard against atherosclerosis and improve blood circulation.

It is now also being studied for a possible role in protecting against certain types of cancer, such as skin cancer and breast cancer.

Some natural health experts believe that inflammation is often at the root of the overwhelming majority of serious health conditions and that controlling this inflammation should be our main focus if we want good health

In our opinion, turmeric's potent anti-inflammatory properties may be the reason the health benefits of turmeric extend so widely.

So, the next time you stay in to cook an ethnic dish, try adding some tasty and healthy turmeric.

Heated Mattress Pad

by Saurabh Jain

Heated mattress pad produces heat, which often relaxes the body muscles and gives a soothing feeling. It provides comforts to the pain areas, especially if it is do with lower back pain. These mattress pads are probably the most revolutionary and easily accessible method of relieving pain and muscle spasm of lower back. This type of mattress pads are very helpful in getting quick relief from back pain which is one of the most common phenomenon in America today.

Relaxing With Heated Mattress Pads Heated mattress pads provide pain relief from lower back, arthritis and other muscle or joint problems. It is much better than having an electric blanket covering you. Scientifically speaking, heat always moves upwards, so it is better to have heat rise up from the lower part of your body to spread to other areas, rather than have it blown away in the air. This way your bed would heat in an efficient manner and attain that requisite warmth.

There are various kinds of heat producing mattress pads available in the market today. They come in various sizes and colors. One of the most popular is the Pillow Top Heated Mattress pad. This is also the most luxurious of heated mattress pads in the world. It has 200-thread count cotton filled with 100 percent polyester cluster fiber and is approximately 1/2" thick. Moreover, this mattress pad comes with digital control. All you have to do is set your comfort level and let the system take control from there. The system senses and responds to the temperature of your room and your body and adjusts itself accordingly.

The normal therapeutic temperature is 400 C or 1040 F. At this temperature, blood flow increases and helps in reducing stiffness, relaxing sore muscles and provides a soothing comfort. Heat is normally preferred over cold for chronic lower back pain and arthritis. You need to apply heat for at least 20 minutes to get complete relief. And then, you would be as good as before!

"Life Skills: Improve the Quality of Your Life With ..." author Marian K. Volkman: BOOK REVIEW

by Cherie L. Burbach

How good can life get? Well that’s the question we all strive to figure out. “Life Skills – Improve the Quality of Your Life with Metapsychology” addresses this question on the emotional, mental, and physical levels. It also spends time on how we can improve the quality of our relationships. “Life Skills” highlights key factors from metapsychology (as developed by Frank A. Gerbode, MD) and shows how these factors can be used on a daily basis for improved overall quality of life.

For those like me that are new to this subject, “Life Skills” begins with a description on how to use the book and get the most out of it. It then continues with the goals of the book, and as you’ll see these are goals most of want in our lives:

to be fully present to increase your knowledge and awareness of how life works to bring about positive change in your mental and emotional world, which makes bringing about positive change in the outer environment much easier to do to accessing more of your potential change in the outer environment much easier to do to access more of your potential through practical exercises

Early in the book I found the exercise on recognizing (and getting a handle on) our judgments of others and feelings of envy or jealousy interesting and enlightening. I also found the discussion on “life as a journey” versus living “life as art” very relevant to my own world.

The book is broken into a few paragraphs about a particular point from the chapter topic, bullet items to ponder (or write about), and an exercise to do (or just think about) to reinforce the lesson. Finally, the end of each chapter summarizes the topics covered.

The book is sprinkled with humor throughout to ease the reading along. Best of all, there is no wrong way to do the exercises in the book. All exercises are meant to help increase your own awareness about particular areas of your life. I found I got as much out of thinking about the exercises as I did writing them out.

“Like Skills” doesn’t try and change you, but encourages you to just first observe your life (and provides helpful hints on how to do that) and pay attention to what is working. Along that line, I found the emotional scale discussed in Chapter 3 very helpful and applicable to several situations I had going on currently in my life.

I also appreciated the recurrent theme throughout the book that encourages us, in becoming happier, more emotionally stable people, to get along with others as part of that involvement. Too often self- improvement books focus only on ourselves – and perhaps even to the detriment of others. This book doesn’t take this type of view, and it’s refreshing.

There is a discussion on repairing breakdowns in communication I think every reader will find useful. Who among us hasn’t had an odd misstep in communication with someone we care about? As we know this type of problem can lead to something much bigger if left ignored, that is, if the communication doesn’t continue to move forward. This book reinforces reasons why you don’t want to hold back communication during these types of issues, and why doing so can just make things worse.

Perhaps what is most appreciated about this book is that is uses examples from everyday life – things that each of us deal with and encounter all the time – to guide us through the exercises. So often when we’re happy with the normal everyday things in life, we’re able to handle the bigger challenges with grace and humility. When we’re content with ourselves we’re also able to help others during times of distress.

“Life Skills” provides some additional thoughts in the afterward section to help conclude the book, as well as a glossary to define any terms the reader may not be familiar with. I’ll have to admit that before I read “Life Skills,” I was not at all familiar with metapsychology and therefore not sure what to expect. However, I was quickly drawn in to the book because of its no-nonsense approach and real-life application. This really is a book that anyone, regardless of their current situation in life, can benefit from.

How To Beat The Coming Flu & Cold Season, Naturally

by Judy Thompson

In the last year or so, have you experienced one or more bad colds, or possibly had a bout with the flu? Numerous people, some even in our own local area, have actually been laid up with pneumonia!

In the last three decades there have been several viral and bacterial epidemics—and this at a time when we should have been able to expect the eradication of many infectious diseases. Why is this? Why does it seem that in recent years, in spite of all the wonderful medical help available, that people are sicker than ever?

Some people say this is due to the overuse of too-potent antibiotics or it might be because of the widespread use of vaccines. Plus, with globalization and the increasing availability of long distance flights, it is easier for infections to be spread around the world. There are already a number of infectious organisms that can and will be a major problem to patients, physicians, health care workers and others throughout the world.

With Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) now reported in the “healthy community” it becomes clear that we need something that can take on these superbugs! A big concern is the possibility that multi-drug resistant germs will spread throughout our communities. If we can reduce the extent to which pharmaceutical antibiotics are used and not be so dependent on them, it stands to reason that when really needed, the drugs may be more effective.

What can the average person do to help prevent the common cold or some major illness? A lot! Learning how to eat healthy, get adequate exercise, and the right amount of sleep, are all important to preventing illness. However, just living a “healthy lifestyle” may not be enough to keep you from getting sick. We have so many viruses and toxins in our environment, that staying well can be quite a challenge.

But research has recently produced some really great solutions that can help you reduce your chance of being attacked by one of the superbugs, or if you do get hit with a superbug, the severity of your illness probably will not be as bad. Research has shown that low concentrations of allicin, derived from garlic, is able to kill most of the superbugs. For more details, go to www.4thebuzz.com.

Here are some statistics from a Cold & Cough study conducted by Peter Josling. This was a double-blind, placebo-controlled survey. The purpose of the study was to determine whether a unique garlic supplement (Allisure) that contains stabilized allicin could prevent colds in healthy volunteers.

Here are the results.

• 65% reduction in common cold
• 80% reduction of severity of symptoms and duration
• 90% reduction of re-infection
• Product is well tolerated and offers many other advantages according to volunteer reports

It was concluded that allicin was overwhelmingly favored as a supplement. It was also determined that garlic is effective against salmonella, food poisoning, streptococcus and a host of other things. Garlic can stimulate and boost the human immune system and is used in both treatment and prevention of diseases. Again, see www.4thebuzz.com for more details.

Another nutrient, ginger, when combined with allicin, has been shown to make allicin even more effective. Ginger provides nutritional support for the digestive and circulatory systems. There have been 19 double-blind studies about ginger and it is probably the best medication for treating nausea and sickness.

Since it may take awhile to build up your immune system to the point where you will be able to ward off most, if not all, of the possible superbugs that come your way, I believe that it would be wise to start now. Take care of your body from all angles: adequate sleep, improved nutrition, exercise, and consider the addition of nutrition supplements. A good general multi-vitamin and mineral supplement, plus allicin could be great starters for you to help prevent illness in your family.
