Backpain And ESI (Epidural Steroid Injection)

by Saurabh Jain

Backpain and ESI are related to each other in that the latter is very often used to find out the true cause of the former. Back ache is a common phenomenon and is generally a result of a strain or injury to the muscles and ligaments supporting the human spine. An Epidural Steroid Injection or ESI is the most common type of injection given to patients suffering from back and neck pain. The pain in the back can be constant or intermittent and its intensity may vary from a dull ache to a searing feeling.

In a large number of cases, back pain vanishes or can be cured within a few weeks. However, in cases of chronic pain, medical advice is necessary. Patients having difficulty in passing urine or experiencing numbness in the back or genital area or weakness and pain in the legs or feeling unsteady while standing should see a physician immediately. Spinal injections are often used to find out the true cause of the back pain and than to actually treat the pain. Injections which provide temporary relief are called therapeutic injections. In other cases spinal injections are used to diagnose the cause of the back pain. ESI is generally injection used to treat back pain.

The space between the covering of the spinal cord and the inside of the bony spinal canal is called the epidural space. An injection in this area ensures that the medication moves across the whole of the spine and covers all the nerve routs and joints to relieve the back pain. ESIs are generally very effective in the treatment and the true diagnosis of the back pain.

In most of the cases where spinal injections are used, a local anesthetic called Lidocaine is used. Lidocaine is a fast acting drug and its effects wear off in a couple of hours. So it is generally used as a diagnostic tool. Bupivacaine, another anesthetic is used to provide some relief from the back pain. Another commonly used injection is Cortisone. Cortisone is commonly injected with a local anesthetic to reduce inflammation in the affected areas of the patient suffering from severe back pain.

An epidural steroid injection or ESI can be injected in three different ways. In the first case a caudal block is placed through the sacral gap which is the space below our lumbar spine. Than the injection is placed into the epidural space. This type of block reduces the chances of puncturing the dura.

The most common method of giving an ESI to reduce back pain is the Tran lumbar approach. Under this method the needle is placed between vertebrae from the back. The third method is generally used for diagnostic purposes. The transforaminal approach involves injection of the medication around a specific nerve root to find out the exact problem area. The foraminae are small openings between your vertebrae through which the nerve roots exit the spinal canal and enter the body.

Spinal injections should not be used in the case of patients taking a platelet-inhibiting drug, such as aspirin or NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).

Toilet Training Children With Down Syndrom

by Jane Orville

Most parents wonder how their children with Down syndrome will learn to become toilet trained. This is understandably an anxious time for a parent, as you might be thinking about sending your child to a preschool program and wonder if he will ever be out of diapers. Teaching any child to use the toilet can be a frustrating time for parents, and the child, but if you relax and remember that you cannot “make” him learn before he is ready, he will leave those diapers behind someday.

One professional suggests taking a few days to document your child’s voiding schedule. Check his diaper every twenty to thirty minutes to see when he is going, and what (urine, bowel movement). When data is taken for a few days and you can see some semblance of a pattern, you will want to schedule toilet times for those specific times of the day.

One suggestion is to give your child some fluids to drink about 15 to 20 minutes before you plan on toileting him. Tell your child he is going to use the toilet, and if needed, use the sign for it and help him make the sign.

Make his toilet training experience pleasant. Have books available for looking at during this time, and keep the toileting time short, about 7 or 8 minutes at the most. If your child does not void during this time, don’t force it or use an unpleasant or frustrated tone. Have him get off and then try again at the next scheduled time.

A lot of praise is necessary when toilet training your child, especially for a child who has Down syndrome. Giving an edible reinforcement might be tried, but this can lead to the child expecting something to eat every time he has success on the toilet. Since children with Down syndrome already may struggle with weight issues, it is recommended that reinforcements such as verbal praise, hugs, high fives be used instead.

Some parents may have expectations for their child in the area of toilet training that are too high. Remember that not only is your child delayed mentally, he also may lack the proper muscle control at the average age that an “average” child is toilet trained. He will eventually learn this too; it will be on his own individual timetable.

Night training may be even further behind the average child’s schedule. Manufacturers are now making disposable underwear (commonly called “pull-ups”) in sizes large enough to accommodate a child up to 125 pounds. This does not mean that your child will be night trained so much later, but he just might not learn until he is that size, and you need to be aware of that fact.

“Megan was a few months older than four when she was toilet trained during the day, and in retrospect, I wish I had relaxed more with her in the preceding years in trying to get her trained. I felt a lot of pressure from other people, but you can’t “make” her learn something until she is ready to learn it. She wasn’t night trained until she was ten and a half. It just happened when it did, and that’s all there is to it,” says Valerie, mother of a 17 year old daughter with Down syndrome.

Wellness Achieved Through Meditation

by Greg Mauro

The process of meditation used to calm your mind and lead to inner-peace is centuries old. The driving force behind meditation is that if one can attain a peaceful mind, they will be free from anxiety, worries and negative forces. Ideally, they will be in complete control of their mind - controlling thoughts, feelings and anxieties.

One of the most important aspects of meditation is breathing. For beginners, control and focus on breathing does not come easy. Many let their minds wander to things that preoccupy their days and lose focus. Mastering your breathing pattern is the first step towards mental wellness as it helps lay the groundwork for a calm mind.

A good seat and comfortable posture are ideal for meditation. Certain aspects to aim for include: straight (but not tense) back, head floating naturally above the shoulders, chin turned slightly down and pelvis tilted slightly forward. Most meditate while sitting down; sitting cross-legged is the most popular positioning. If you cannot get comfortable with these positions, try shifting around, but the main keys are to be relaxed with a straight back.

Many will often try to meditate while lying down. Be wary of this as it is easy to fall asleep. Though that can be relaxing in its own right, it does nothing in the process of bringing inner peace as you will find yourself waking up to the same mental disarray.

Meditation is a great way to promote personal wellness. Stress and anxiety derive from thoughts (usually negative) racing through the mind, destroying any sense of relaxation of contentment. Take time to meditate whenever you can. It doesn’t need to be everyday, or for long periods at a time. But every chance you get to clear your thoughts and focus on your inner-self will clear your goals and ambitions and put you on your way towards mental wellness.

Massage & Massage Rollers

by Saurabh Jain

When lower back pain hits you, a massage and massage rollers can be very effective in relaxing the tensed muscles. Massage is an ancient pain relieving technique and provides you relief from day-to-day stress, muscle cramps, while easing the back pain and headaches, by increasing blood circulation. A massage also flushes out toxins and wastes from your body, thus lending a healthy shine to the skin.

Effective Massage through Massage Rollers

These days, an alternative way to providing your body with the much needed massage is through massage rollers. If you don’t have the time to go to a massage parlor or if you are staying alone, you can use a massage roller to give yourself instant relief. There are various types of massage rollers available in the market today:

The Omni Massage roller –

It provides pressure and has the necessary mobility for a great massage. It has a directional massage ball, with an easy to grip handle. You can use it anywhere and carry it in your purse or bag. You can massage your lower back, neck or even forehead, if you have a headache.

You can begin by applying pressure on the roller and then gently roll the ball in circular motions around the lower back. While moving it in circular motion, you can apply the necessary pressure. Once you are able to identify the spot from where the pain is originating, you can continue to massage the affected area for 10-20 minutes. The massage roller will, thus, provide you relief as it soothes and loosens the muscle tissue or ligaments. It will also gradually increase your blood circulation, leading to the healing of the affected area and elimination of the back pain.

You can also find a Knuckle baller sports massager in markets. This massager fit into your hand near the knuckles and has four directional massage balls to provide you with four times the comfort. A Knuckle baller sports massager is small, so, you can carry it to a theater, park or your office. Massage anytime and feel relaxed!

Exercise will keep you motivated in life

by John Collins

Did you know that exercise can actually motivate you to do more in your life?

It’s true. If you don’t do any exercise what can sometimes happen is your muscles can actually start to atrophy. Although nutrition plays an important role in maintaining or even building muscle cells, exercise also plays an important role.

So, how does this relate to being able to do more with your life?

The answer is simple, because exercise keeps your muscles healthy, this in return can give you more energy. This results in you being able to achieve more in your life gradually. However, you don’t want to exercise to much, as this will make you tired, de-motivate you and eventually your body will be crying for you to stop. Remember, the body doesn’t really like change, its happy being what it is. For this reason, if you want to change your energy levels and even the way you look, it can take some immense reprogramming of your daily habits.

If you have the will to change, then you can change, by eating healthy and exercising on a regular basis, you will improve the way you feel, this will result in you being more productive with your time. You won’t want to sit around as much, and eventually exercise will become your friend.

When you’re down in life, sometimes you may rely on people to bring you back up. I have come to reply on exercise, it’s my best friend, it never lets you down, and it’s always there for you.

Right now you may be thinking, give me a break, but give it a try. Take 6 months out and exercise and eat healthy, see how you feel afterwards. I am positive you will feel like a different person and have a while new out look on life.

To check out the supplement we take daily with exercise and highly recommend, be sure to check out http://www.exercise-guides.info/

Palliative Care Information

by Gay Redmile

Palliative care is specialised health care of dying people which aims to maximise quality of life and assist families and carers during progressive illness and after death.

Palliative care, also called comfort care, focusses not on death, but on compassionate specialized care for the living. Complete palliative care programs also address mental health and spiritual needs. The focus is to make the person feel in control of their treatment and their quality of life. Palliative care involves family and friends, who also need to be prepared for the death of someone they love.

When people enter a hospice or begin palliative care, their loved ones may begin to experience increased feelings of grief and bereavement. These feelings may intensify as people put final affairs in order, which may include funeral and memorial planning. Other issues that need to be considered are power of attorney arrangements, and the right to die, including voluntary euthanasia.

Palliative care may be take place in a hospice, at home or in hospital. Services available to the person and their family include:
Nursing
Consultancy to the person's doctor
Day care
Diet advice
Loan of equipment
Physiotherapy
Occupational therapy.
Counselling
Social worker services
Spiritual support
Pastoral care
Bereavement support - Palliative care workers also offer help and support during the grieving process.

Because medical needs vary depending on the disease that is leading toward death, specialized palliative care programs exist for common conditions such as cancer and AIDS. Specialized caregiving is also needed if changes in the brain lead to coma or dementia.

Palliative Care has been recognised as a medical specialty since 1987, however it is only recently that the palliative care needs of children and their families been considered. Palliative care for children is closely related to adult palliative care. Palliative care for children is the active total care of the child's body, mind and spirit, and also involves giving support to the family. It begins when illness is diagnosed, and continues regardless of whether or not a child receives treatment directed at the disease.

There also exists various support services, training and education programs, respite services and resource centres provided for carers.

Do bear in mind that palliative care can make the difference between a gentle and dignified death or one where suffering can be terrible and prolonged.

Tea And Some Of Its Benefits

by Gang Deng

Three to five cups of green tea a day can do you a lot of good.

Tea, especially green tea has long been known for its medicinal benefits. It helps digestion, boost metabolism and even wards off cancer and heart disease.

According to whether it is fermented or not, tea can be divided into 3 types:
green tea – not fermented
oolong tea – partially fermented
black tea – fermented
While people may prefer black tea or oolong tea, green tea has more healthy benefits. As it’s dried straight after picking, it keeps most of its valuable polyphenols while its cousins – black tea and oolong tea lose most of theirs in the process of fermentation. Green tea has a lot more polyphenols than black tea or oolong tea. What’s the deal of those polyphenols things, you may wonder? They are known as powerful antioxidants, which remove free radicals from the body. Free radicals in the body's cells are very bad. They very unstable and tend to react negatively with other important molecules like DNA, causing malfunctions and injury on the cellular level. They produce destruction that may therefore pave the way for diseases like heart disease and cancer. Green tea contains rich polyphenols that play an active role in removing the free radicals from the body. Antioxidants in tea are also known to prevent death from second heart attack by helping blood vessels relax, thus blood can flow through more easily. As a result, that can help lower blood pressure and reduce stress on the heart. Studies show green tea drinkers have 50% lower risk of developing stomach or esophageal compared to non green tea drinkers.

One final benefit of green tea drinking can help lose some weight. It’s believed some of its polyphenols and caffeine work together to boost the body’s metabolism, thus boost our energy burning system.

How much tea shall we drink? Generally, three to five cups a day is fairly enough for us to get its medical benefits.

Shall we have a cup of tea now?
